Salina 3-month old named Mason is now home recovering after Onondaga County Sheriff's Deputies say he was injured by his mother's former boyfriend.

In August Mason was rushed to Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital as a newborn. Doctors said they found bleeding on his brain and other injuries.

Mason spent weeks there before being released late last month. His mother says his vitals are now looking good and doctors tell his mother they don't believe he's in pain. However, Mason's mother tells CNYCentral the trauma will be long-lasting. The child right now sees five different doctors across the Syracuse area. He cannot bottle-feed and has a permanent feeding tube. His mother, Madison Washburn, says Mason has seizures even with medication.

CNYCentral spoke to Washburn Thursday. She says it is a miracle Mason is even still alive.

A Salina man is accused of seriously injuring Mason. Matthew Brennan, 22, was charged Wednesday afternoon with reckless assault of a child and endangering the welfare of a child after an investigation by Onondaga County Sheriff's Deputies from the Sheriff’s Office Abused Persons Unit.

Officials say Deputies responded on August 22 for a report of an unconscious infant. Brennan was the live-in boyfriend of Washburn at the time. Washburn says Brennan admitted to her he hurt the child, but didn't go into detail as to how he did it. She now has a restraining order against him.

A GoFundMe donation page has been set up to help the family. It says Madison had to leave her job and is facing a family court battle. They plan to eventually move.
she only asked for $800. A refreshing change.
This is vague. It is not clear if he's the father of the baby, or a boyfriend. Family court battle: who is fighting to get the baby?
Grandparents?

I can't get this story out of my head.

This mother seems to truly love her child he appeared well care for so how does this happen to such a young and defenseless child.

I can believe this woman did not think someone she trusted would hurt her child- but does she live in a place where there is no access to the news.

I wonder why with all this female empowerment and feminism (some) woman are still making shitty choices in who they allow to father their children, play the role of father, and just use them for a place to stay.

Mason was released from the hospital weeks after the assault, but needed continued intensive care. He battled to recover for 15 months after the assault.

Mason died Saturday. He was a year and a half old.

A Salina man will likely face a homicide charge after his girlfriend’s baby died from a brain injury more than a year after a brutal assault.

Matthew Brennan, 23, is accused of violently shaking 2-month-old Mason Washburn on Aug. 22, 2018 in a residence on Hyland Drive.

The baby was colicky and wouldn’t stop crying when Brennan is accused of the assault, Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick said.

The baby’s mother, who was home at the time, has cooperated with authorities after some initial hesitancy, the DA said.

Fitzpatrick declined to provide more details of the incident, noting it was an ongoing case.

Brennan was originally indicted on a charge of reckless assault of a child, but prosecutor Maureen Barry cautioned that the baby’s condition was still very bad. The indictment came in October, after authorities waited more than a year to monitor Mason’s condition.

Now that he’s died, Brennan’s case will be sent to another grand jury, Fitzpatrick said. Brennan remains free on bail from the initial arrest before Mason’s death.

Baby Mason was only 7 weeks old when his mom’s boyfriend shook him violently in the couple’s Salina home in August 2018.
The baby, Mason Washburn, never smiled, ate, walked or talked before dying from his brain injuries more than a year later on Nov. 2, 2019, prosecutor Maureen Barry said.

The brain injury prevented him from controlling his body temperature, leading to repeat hospitalizations for hypothermia in his short life, she added. He couldn’t swallow, was fed through a tube and he was always in danger of aspirating.
Matthew Brennan was sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter. He got five years shaved off his maximum punishment after sparing Mason’s family the trauma of trial.

Brennan avoided a murder charge -- carrying a possible life sentence -- because shaking a baby typically cannot be proven that the person intended to kill the baby vs. only to injure the baby.
After Mason’s injuries, the baby was taken away from his mom as the circumstances were investigated. Even after Brennan was arrested, she never got custody back and could only make supervised visits.

Mason died in foster care without his mother present, his mother Madison Washburn said in court.
The prosecutor said that evidence shows Mason was fatally shaken because Brennan didn’t like the color of Mason’s skin. The baby, who had a different father, was of mixed race. Brennan is white.
