A day of volunteering landed a former Alabama high school teacher and registered sex offender in jail.

Crystal Gilliland was arrested Wednesday afternoon in Blount County after she volunteered at Oneonta Elementary School, AI.com reports.

It's not clear what type of volunteer work Gilliland was doing, but it was in violation of the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act.

"All sex offenders are instructed as to what the requirements of SORNA are for them," Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey told the outlet. "They are required to initial that they have read them and understand them."

Tim Kent, with the Blount County Sheriff's Office, told WIAT that Gilliland has a child at the school.

The 35-year-old former educator plead guilty in 2014 to sending sexually explicit text messages to a 15-year-old student.

The victim told authorities that Gilliland sent him nude photos of herself and told him that she wanted to have sex with him.

Gilliland had to serve six months at the Blount County Correctional Facility, and six months on house arrest. She also had to register as a lifetime sex offender as part of her punishment.
