Rodriguez was known as Belle in the remote Round Valley in northeast Mendocino County where she was born and raised, according to Cora Simmons, a Round Valley tribal member. Rodriguez also was a tribal member and was related to the Lincoln family,

“She was the sweetest child,” Simmons said.

Rodriguez graduated from Round Valley High as its valedictorian, according to school officials. She played basketball,

Rodriguez grew up poor and with little family support, she said. Simmons recalled that she and other tribal women got together to buy Rodriguez shoes, a yearbook and a class ring for graduation. “We wanted to help her have a perfect graduation,”

That is so sad. Graduating Valedictorian is no easy accomplishment. "Her life took a turn after graduation"... Now she can never have the chance to turn it back around.

RIP Belle

Two Covelo brothers were in custody Thursday evening in connection with the weekend slaying of 21-year-old Rosalena "Belle" Rodriguez.

Mendocino County Sheriff's officials said Thursday morning that Jeremy Jason Freeman-Britton, 21, and Sidney Lewis Freeman, 25, were arrested on suspicion of homicide. By late afternoon, however, sheriff's officials announced the homicide allegations against Sidney Freeman were dropped.

Both men remained in jail without bail late Thursday. Freeman-Britton was also being held on suspicion of making criminal threats in an unrelated incident, the Sheriff's Office reported.

Round Valley tribal member Cora Simmons said the brothers are both tribal members.

A Willits man who was arrested in connection with a Mendocino County slaying is now being held in the Lake County jail, suspected of armed robbery.

Sidney Lewis Freeman, 25, is suspected of robbing at knifepoint two girls and a woman at the Regency Inn Motel in Lakeport according to the Lakeport Police Department.

The suspect took an undisclosed amount of cash and fled on foot. Several hours later, police arrested Freeman.
Freeman and his brother, Jeremy Jason Freeman-Britton, in May 2014 were arrested in connection with the shooting death of 21-year-old Rosalena “Belle” Rodriguez in Covelo. The Mendocino County District Attorney’s Office declined to prosecute Freeman. DA spokesman Mike Geniella declined to provide information about the case.
Britton pleaded guilty to the murder and was sentenced to 19-years-to-life in prison.
