The victim, who was the son of former WBU welterweight champion Eamonn Magee Sr, was stabbed on the outskirts of west Belfast on Saturday morning.

Police said he was stabbed "a number of times" in the back garden of a friend's house in Summerhill Park, Twinbrook.

Detectives believe his killer had been "lying in wait" for him.

Mr McVea said the young boxer, who was an engineering student at Ulster University, was stabbed as he came out of his friend's house to check on a pizza delivery.

"Nobody would have known that Eamonn would have been coming out of the house to look for the pizza delivery, therefore we believe that the person was lying in wait for Eamonn as he would have come out of the house."

Police said they want to hear from witnesses who were in the area between 01:30 BST and 03:00 BST on Saturday.

"We believe the attack happened at 2.30 in the morning. But we believe the person may have been in the area for some time prior to the attack," Mr McVea said.

He also appealed to anyone who saw a person leaving the vicinity of Beckett's Bar on the Stewartstown Road before making their way down through the Twinbrook estate during the early hours of Saturday.

Such a promising life cut short becoz of some dick with a complex. What a worthless piece of shit coward the murder is. Didn't even have the stones to face him one on one. He had to stab him unexpectedly. Guys like him are fucking parasites.
RIP Mr. Magee Jr. Too bad you couldn't turn the tables on this toad.

The 32-year-old man being questioned about the attack was arrested in Dunmurry on Saturday.

He is believed to be the estranged husband of the friend Mr Magee Jr was visiting.

There is also quite a bit about how the father feels about losing his son in such a way. Heart-rending.

Oh, and I realised this earlier story is likely about the father, Eamonn Magee Sr: http://www.dreamindemon.com/communi...ssaulting-woman-says-she-hit-him-first.75723/

A 32-year-old barman has appeared in court in County Armagh charged with the murder of professional boxer Eamonn Magee Jr.

Orhan Koca, who is Turkish and whose address was given as no fixed abode, denied stabbing the 22 year old to death.

The court was told Mr Koca, a father of three young children, had consistently denied murder from the moment of his arrest and throughout 19 police interviews.

A defence solicitor said he intended to apply for bail in four weeks' time.

"There is a full acknowledgement that this was a truly horrific crime. To have a child taken away in such brutal circumstances is the worst thing that can happen to a parent," the solicitor said.

Mr Koca, who was dressed in a grey tracksuit, sat in the dock with his arms folded and was flanked by two prison guards. At times, he looked towards Mr Magee Snr.

He answered loudly and clearly "Yes" when asked by the court clerk to confirm his identity.

A prosecuting lawyer said bail would be opposed in all circumstances.

The man charged with murdering Belfast boxer Eamonn Magee Jr has been treated in hospital after he was attacked in Maghaberry Prison.

Orhan Koca, who is originally from Turkey, sustained a broken cheek-bone in the prison attack on Wednesday and needed stitches above his right eye.

Mr Koca's defence solicitor, Eamon O'Connor, told BBC Radio Ulster's Evening Extra programme that his client was attacked after leaving his cell for a family visit.

"He was going from the cell to the visiting area. Two other prisoners were speaking with him. He turned around and then he was hit in his face," Mr O'Connor said.

The lawyer said that as well as the fracture and stitches, Mr Koca suffered "possible nerve damage" with a loss of feeling around his mouth.

Mr O'Connor said he spoke to his client on Friday morning and he was "not able to communicate very well" because of his injuries.
