A Connecticut woman whose dog was found frozen to death outside on New Year's Day has been charged with animal cruelty.

Hartford police announced the charge against 50-year-old Michelle Bennett on Thursday.

The 3-year-old male pit bull was found chained inside a dog house in the backyard of a city home on Monday.

A veterinarian who examined the dog said it was "frozen solid" and also appeared to be malnourished because it was underweight for its size. The dog had also been lying in its own feces.

Police say the owner has been in jail on unrelated charges and said she had made arrangements for the dog's care.

We have an eccentric lawyer in our town, who is married to her job, never had kids and is a full on animal lover ... She put a system in place so that up on arrest each person is asked if they have pets at home that require care. If you indicate in the affirmative, officers will make arrangements for you, so this shit doesn't happen.

50 years old and in jail ... and has a pit bull which you shouldn't be allowed to own if you're having to worry about custody or otherwise living outside the law.

That's fantastic! Too bad more places don't have a program like that.

Poor dog, chain this whore outside In the cold after she hasn’t been fed. Listen to her beg, point and laugh. She deserves it! I love the way all you guys think around here

Bless her! Would that more places did something like this.

A Hartford woman charged with animal cruelty after a dog that police said was left in her care was found frozen to death Jan. 1 was granted a special form of probation Monday that will allow her to avoid a criminal record.

Michelle Bennett, 50, was granted accelerated rehabilitation after a hearing in front of Hartford Superior Court Judge Omar A. Williams.
The judge said he was troubled by the facts of the case — the emaciated 3-year-old pit bull was found frozen solid in its doghouse during a bitter cold snap in January — but because there were questions about who had responsibility to care for the dog, he opted to grant Bennett the special probation.

He did put her on probation for the maximum term, two years, and ordered her to complete 500 hours of community service during probation.
