After finding a decapitated head lying on the beach Saturday morning in Harrison County, Mississippi officials were able to positively confirm the identity of the female torso that washed up Thursday in neighboring Hancock County as belonging to 22-year-old Jaren Lockhart of New Orleans. Also found on Saturday were three pieces of Lockhart's legs, said Don Bass, chief deputy for the Hancock County Sheriff's Office.

According to New Orleans police, Lockhart was last seen by her boyfriend Tuesday about 8 p.m. at a Mid-City motel where the couple was living. He told police she was headed to a Bourbon Street club where she worked.

Before Lockhart's head was discovered, investigators were awaiting DNA evidence on the torso found earlier in Bay St. Louis for a positive identification. The torso had a stab wound to the back, Bass said -- probably the cause of death, though that has not been confirmed, he said.

Although the head had been in the water for an estimated three days, Bass said, it was easily identified as Lockhart's, in part because of tattoos on her neck.

Before Lockhart's head, along with some clothing, was found by police in Long Beach at midday Saturday, two pieces of leg were found in different locations Saturday morning in Pass Christian, also in Harrison County. The first piece was spotted by a fisher, who notified police and set in motion an extensive search on land and in the water, stretching across the two counties.

A third piece of leg was discovered later in the day floating in the water in the harbor at Pass Christian.

Altogether, Bass said, investigators have "one full leg and one half leg," minus the feet.
[...]

The events that led to Lockhart's death, dismemberment and disposal, Bass said, are "inconceivable."

Based on Thursday's and Friday's high winds and high tides, he said, it appeared likely that the body parts floated in from somewhere to the west of Bay St. Louis.

Chip Price, the night clerk at the Capri Motel at 2424 Tulane Ave., said the couple had been staying at the motel for two or three months, and would pay $50 in cash each day.

About 7 p.m. every night, Price said, he would call a cab for Lockhart, who he said was working as a dancer in the French Quarter. Price, whose shift ends at midnight, said the couple kept to themselves, and the only thing he remembered about the boyfriend was that he spent his time hanging out with Lockhart. Police have not released the boyfriend's name.

An employee at Temptations strip club at 327 Bourbon said Lockhart worked the night shift from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m.

The day her boyfriend reported Lockhart missing, Price said, he explained he could no longer pay for his room and moved his belongings to an acquaintance's room at the same motel. Price said he hasn't seen the boyfriend since then.

In a news release Thursday afternoon, police said Lockhart's boyfriend reported that he became concerned when he was unable to reach her and contacted police.
[...]

The search for body parts will continue on the Mississippi coast, Bass said, depending on the tides and weather conditions. Pathologists and coroners in both counties are working together to piece together Lockhart's body, he said.

With more than 20 miles of beach in the two counties, Bass said, there is a lot of ground to cover. He said he was thankful that most of the body parts were found by search teams rather than children playing on the beach.

Anyone else's first thought that it might have been Luka Magnotta's victim? So weird that only the head is missing. Figured that attention whore would send it somewhere nice and public.

Back to this one, I understand arguments, but chopping someone up is a damn extreme way to "win". RIP Jaren.

BAY ST. LOUIS, MS –
Last Thursday, a construction crew working on a*beach in Bay St. Louis found*the torso of a then unidentified white female.
According to police, *the body had a stab wound to the chest and was missing the head, legs and arms. Two days later, a calf was discovered on the beach. Shortly after, a thigh. Not 20 minutes later, a head. Then, lastly, fishermen found another calf and some women’s apparel.

Her boyfriend last saw her*Tuesday*night after she took a cab from a motel to Bourbon Street where she worked as a stripper. She was last seen on surveillance video leaving work early Wednesday morning.
A DNA match has not been made yet, but police are certain the remains belong to Lockhart after*matching*her tattoos to the remains. They also stated the clothes she is seen wearing in the video matches the items discovered at the beach.
Hancock County Lead Investigator Glenn Grannan*said, “Our primary focus, up to this point, had been identifying the victim about midway last night into our investigation concerning that, we started to switch focus to try and determine who is responsible for this heinous act.”

Lockhart was a dancer at a strip club on Bourbon Street, police said. According to investigators, two people -- a man and a woman -- were with Lockhart when she left work before she vanished.

Hancock County Chief Deputy Don Bass said Lockhart's clothing washed up on the beach over the weekend. The clothes were identified by Lockhart's boyfriend, Bass said.

The boyfriend has been interviewed and is cooperating with investigators, Bass told WDSU.
Investigators said they have been getting a bevy of calls with information on the case, but no suspect has been pinpointed yet.

"Persons of Interest' become suspects in dancer's brutal murder

HANCOCK COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -
Two people taken in for questioning in the murder of Jaren Lockhart are now being called suspects in her death.
Tuesday, authorities released surveillance video from the New Orleans strip club where Lockhart worked. It showed the couple leaving the club with the woman whose dismembered torso washed up on the beach in Bay St. Louis just days later.

"We got numerous calls from the video that was shown on TV," said Hancock County Sheriff Ricky Adam.

One of those calls lead authorities straight to the two people pictured in the video: Terry Speaks, 39, and Margaret Sanchez, 28, of Kenner, Louisiana.

[...]
The sheriff said at some point during the traffic stop, Speaks ran.

"Mr. Speaks, as identified now, did attempt to flee at that point from the custody of the police officers and was apprehended, to my best understanding, by the US Marshals in a field in a wooded area," said Chief Deputy Don Bass.

Bass said Speaks is a convicted sex offender from North Carolina.

"We understand he has a colorful past."

Speaks is being held on a fugitive warrant for failing to register. Margaret Sanchez is charged with aiding and abetting a fugitive.

"They have been interviewed and that's about as far as we can go with it," Sheriff Adam said. "And they are being interviewed now and they are being interviewed again right now. Their vehicle is being processed, the FBI assisting us with the processing of the vehicle."

The two have not been charged in Lockhart's murder, but the sheriff said that could possibly come later.

"At some time, he will be transported to New Orleans and held for the Marshals there before he's extradited back to North Carolina. Should the evidence come up between now and then, we'll let the evidence dictate the steps we take from there."

Terry Speaks is being held by federal authorities. Margaret Sanchez is being held in the Tangipahoa Parish Jail under a $1500 bond.

Suspect may have lured dancer to private party

HANCOCK COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -
Investigators are beginning to put together more details about the last hours of Jaren Lockhart's life and how she may have ended up with the two people now suspected of killing her.
Though neither have been charged, investigators now believe the two suspects, Terry Speaks and Margaret Sanchez, tried to lure other Bourbon Street dancers to their home the same night Jaren Lockhart left club Temptations with the couple.

Hancock County Lead Investigator Glenn Grannan said, "Both girls were asked to come join them in maybe like a threesome and then they changed it to a party where they would make $700, $800 something to entice them to go."

Grannan talked to two women who say Sanchez and Speaks tried to lure them home.

"Both girls thought our female suspect was somewhat freaky as they described it and didn't feel comfortable, and they declined it and eventually they found someone to go," Grannan said.

That someone Grannan said was 22-year-old Jaren Lockhart.

"We have witnesses stating they heard Jaren ask to leave work early so she could go make some extra money on a party, so we believe she was enticed to go with the hope she would make some extra money," Grannan said.

Survelliance video shows Lockhart leaving Temptations early Wednesday morning with both Speaks and Sanchez.

Since apprehending the two, investigators have spent hours interviewing the couple about what happened that night

"She was very adjatated, very excitable, she was of course upset. It appeared maybe even under the influence of something," Grannan said. "He would speak about anything he wanted to speak about, unless you wanted to speak about this he referred to his attorney."

"We didn't obtain any confessions but received a lot of information," Grannan said.

While they are considered suspects, investigators have not ruled others out.

"They are our primary suspects because their actions in this time period, there are so many elements that can't be explained by us or them," Grannan said.

This is not Terry Speaks first run in with the law, he served two years in prison for statutory rape in North Carolina and since then he has been charged three times for failing to register as a sex offender.

Margaret Sanchez's public defender says his client is being released from the Tangipahoa Parish jail.

The 28-year-old woman was named a suspect in the murder of Bourbon Street dancer Jaren Lockhart. Sanchez has been behind bars in Tangipahoa Parish since June 12, the night she and fellow murder suspect Terry Speaks were arrested. Sanchez was charged with resisting arrest.

Sanchez was charged later with harboring a sex offender, a felony offense. Her bond has been set at $250,000.

But Friday, public defender Allen Harvey told FOX 8 News that the District Attorney's office had sent a "rejection letter" Friday, indicating Sanchez would not face the harboring charge, after all.

A spokesperson for the Tangipahoa Sheriff's Office says Sanchez was either released or in the process of being released.

This week marks a year since pieces of a Bourbon Street dancer's body began washing ashore on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Since then, two people who were seen leaving the strip club where 22-year-old Jaren Lockhart worked have been named as suspects in the case. 1 of them is free and the other is awaiting release from federal prison next year on an unrelated charge. Neither has been charged in the Lockhart case.

Investigator Glenn Grannon of the Hancock, County, Miss., Sheriff's Office says the FBI is helping out in the case. But it remains unclear when or if it will be solved.

Jaren Lockhart.
Kenner Police Chief Steve Caraway confirmed Tuesday that his department and the Jefferson Parish District Attorney's Office have taken over the investigation into the June 2012 murder of Bourbon Street dancer Jaren Lockhart.
[....]
Kenner police have had some involvement in probing the case since the outset.
[...]
Kenner police investigators searched a home in the 2000 Block of Connecticut Street where at least one of the suspects in Lockhart's murder lived.

"Hancock County felt that they took it as far as they could and they didn't have the resources that we do to move the case further ahead," Caraway told news reporters during a press conference at Kenner Police Department headquarters.
[...]
"There are things that are being developed fairly regularly and this isn't something that the information just stopped coming in back in 2012," he said. "That's not the case."

Investigators said Lockhart was last seen alive in early June 2012 with Terry Speaks and Margaret Sanchez, who remain suspects in the murders. Days after being spotted with the pair, Lockhart's remains body parts began washing up on Mississippi beaches.

Now, the sheriff's office in Hancock County believes Lockhart was killed in the Kenner home that was searched months ago.

"As time went on, we were able to come up with some additional information and I would not call it evidence, but some additional information that is pretty convincing, or pretty suggestive - pretty suggestive, let's put it that way - that the crime took place in Kenner," said Glenn Grannan,
[....]
"It appeared as though we would have a tough time establishing that it took place in Mississippi," he said.

And he did not dispute Caraway's statement that his department was running low on resources to continue probing the murder.
[....]
While Mississippi authorities believe Lockhart was killed in Kenner, Caraway was not ready to make that leap.

"We know that the suspects came to Kenner," he said. "Now as far as who was with them when they came to Kenner and what took place, that's what we're looking at now."
[....]
"I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we do bring it to a conclusion, obviously, absolutely nobody deserves to have their life ended this way," Caraway said.

The local FBI office issued the following statement regarding its involvement in the case:

"In follow-up to Kenner Police Chief Steve Caraway's press announcement earlier today, FBI New Orleans confirms that we have been involved in the Lockhart case since its inception, working with the Kenner Police Department and law enforcement from Hancock County, Mississippi.

"Some of the processing on evidence we have received has been completed and we have shared the results with our partners. More lab examinations of evidence continues as the investigation into the crime continues."

Margaret Sanchez, a woman previously identified in connection with the murder of Jaren Lockhart, was arrested Wednesday morning and is expected to be charged with a count of second-degree murder, a source close to the investigation
Officials with the Kenner Police Department, which recently assumed the lead in the investigation, have confirmed the information. A news conference to discuss the arrest will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m.

The source told WDSU that members of the U.S. Marshals Service picked Sanchez up in Metairie about 7 a.m.

Though investigators considered her a suspect early in the probe, Sanchez was arrested only on charges not directly related to the killing of Lockhart, whose remains washed ashore in Mississippi in the summer of 2012.

Sanchez was credited for time served on a separate misdemeanor charge.

She and a man named Terry Speaks were the last people known to have seen Lockhart alive.
[...]
Detectives searched the home of Sanchez and Speaks with the aid of cadaver dogs. Investigators with the FBI and local law enforcement carted off bags of evidence that were taken to FBI headquarters in Virginia for further analysis. Details on what investigators seized from the home have not been released.

Speaks is in a federal corrections center for crimes not related to the Lockhart case.

Man admits to killing, dismembering body of New Orleans stripper: cops
Terry Speaks, 41, allegedly claimed he and his then-girlfriend, Margaret Sanchez, killed the 22-year-old dancer, Jaren Lockhart, after meeting her in a New Orleans gentlemen's club in 2012. The couple are accused of dismembering Lockhart's body and dumping it off the shore days before it was found.

The couple became suspects in the 22-year-old woman’s death when her dismembered body washed up along a Mississippi shore soon after she was reported missing.

Investigators found footage from a surveillance camera inside the gentlemen’s club where Lockhart worked that showed the stripper leaving with Speaks and Sanchez.
But there wasn’t enough evidence to charge them with a crime until Speaks’ shocking confession.

Sanchez, 29, was collared this week and booked on charges that included second-degree murder and obstruction of justice. She was ordered held in lieu of $750,000 bail.

“I think (investigators) have done an outstanding job, considering there was no evidence to issue an arrest warrant until now.”

Caraway did not discuss any other evidence that led to Sanchez’s arrest.

Speaks — whose rap sheet includes arrests ranging from indecent liberty with a child to assault — was not yet charged in the murder. But Caraway said the suspect’s prison sentence doesn’t end until October, when he faces more sex offender charges.
“He’s not going anywhere,” said Caraway, adding that investigators expect more developments in the case.
“It’s a very complex investigation,” he said. “And certainly (there could be) additional charges or suspects.”
