Omaha police found three suspicious items during a search of a South Omaha home this week that led to charges against a woman and a man:

» a baby crib with a gate zip-tied to the top, so a toddler would stay inside;

» a makeshift bomb outside the front door; and

» nearly 172 grams of methamphetamine in the woman’s bra.

Officers also found the woman’s two daughters, ages 12 and 3.

Kaylee Taylor, 32, and Joseph Hamilton, 34, have been charged with two counts of intentional child abuse, conspiracy to commit a felony, possession of methamphetamine and two other felonies.

Taylor is being held in jail on $115,000 bail. Hamilton is held on $100,000 bail. They must pay 10 percent of their bail amounts to be released.

The children have been deemed wards of the state.

According to a police report, officers obtained a warrant to search a home near 48th and O Streets at 6:50 p.m. Tuesday.

Authorities found the crib in a basement bedroom “with a gate zip-tied to the top of it in order to keep (the toddler) inside the crib,” the police report states.

A camera was located above the crib and could connect to Wi-Fi so that Taylor and Hamilton could watch the toddler “when she was confined inside the crib.”

Officers said they found 171.6 grams — about a third of a pound — of methamphetamine in Taylor’s bra and the makeshift bomb outside the home.

Preliminary hearings on the criminal charges for the couple are scheduled in May.

Well, they had to find some way keep the baby safe while they were working. Were they supposed to just let the lil tyke roam free & get into something dangerous? Its like you never heard of "containment parenting".

An Omaha woman found guilty of child abuse was sentenced Monday in Douglas County Court.

When officers of the Omaha Metro Area Drug Task Force served a court ordered search warrant at Kaylee Taylor’s home in April 2017 it led to a disturbing case of child abuse. Prosecutors say Taylor had zipped tied a baby gate on top of a crib, locking her 3 year old child in the make shift cage.
Kaylee Taylor, 32, and 34-year-old Joseph Hamiliton were arrested on felony child abuse charges.

“There was a substantial amount of drugs that were found during the search warrant. Also a lot of cash - indications of a drug operation but also they were putting these children in danger by keeping them in a cage situation in their crib,” said prosecutor Amy Schuchman.
When Taylor was arrested, she was holding about of a third of a pound of methamphetamine. Taylor was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for the drug charge. Taylor came to court Monday after making a deal with prosecutors, pleading guilty to one count of Attempted Child Abuse - Intentional with no serious injury. But the prosecution claims the 12 year old and 3 year old children were harmed in other ways.
“The older child described to social service workers that mom was ‘very cranky' and easy to anger during this time period. Always irritable, always tired. He was left to parent the 3 year old and he was only 12 at the time. In addition, social workers reported that he had some trauma issues with nightmares about not being able to open the baby gate that had been zip tied to the top of the cage,” said prosecutor Schuchman.

Prosecutors asked for, and received the maximum two year sentence.

Earlier Monday, Joseph Hamilton pleaded guilty to Intentional Child Abuse with No Injury. He was sentenced to 316 days and given credit for 316 days served.
