New Jersey police are on a manhunt Sunday night for the killer in the brutal death of a 62-year-old school teacher.
Police are searching for the murdered school teacher's ex-husband, who vanished after the body was found stabbed more than 80 times.
[...]
Neighbors watched as investigators swarmed the Cliffside Trail home where high school English teacher Judith Novellino was murdered.
The 62-year-old educator was stabbed so many times the scene rattled even the most experienced investigators.
A family member found Judith Novellino's body around 7 p.m. Saturday and called 911. Morris County Prosecutor Robert Bianchi said it appears that Novel lino, an English teacher at Morris Catholic High School, and her killer were involved in "a violent struggle."

Police are now searching for the victim's ex-husband, 63-year-old Anthony Novellino. Police call him a "person of interest," needed for questioning about the Saturday afternoon murder. Members of the public are urged to call Denville Police if they see him or his car, a black 1992 Mazda Miata with a tan convertible top.
On Sunday, Bianchi released the following statement: "The results of the autopsy which was conducted this morning by Morris County Medical Examiner Doctor Ronald Suarez indicate that the victim died from blunt force trauma and that the manner of death is homicide. Over 80 stab wounds were inflicted during what can only be described as a very brutal and violent encounter."
Those who knew Judith Novellino at Morris Catholic High School said they saw no evidence of a troubled home life. They say she was dedicated and friendly, having taught English and French there for close to three decades.
The president of Morris Catholic, Michael St. Pierre, issued the following statement: "She was a trusted teacher, and a dedicated professional, who loved the school and loved our students."
"My wife and I are both educators, so besides the neighborhood being shocked, I'm sure the kids at the school, the staff and the parents are going to be in a lot of a situation of being concerned about the teacher and upset," Denville resident Ted Loeffler said.

Denville teacher's slaying shocks community, school
DENVILLE — A Morris Catholic High School teacher was found stabbed to death in her Denville home, according to authorities who were searching today for her ex-husband as a "person of interest" in the killing.

Judith Novellino, 62, whom colleagues described as a "good soul" and "wonderful mentor" was stabbed more than 80 times in the home on Cliffside Trail in what Morris County Prosecutor Robert A. Bianchi said "can only be described as a very brutal and violent encounter."

Share Novellino’s daughter discovered the body about 7 p.m. Saturday and called 911, authorities said. The homicide was believed to have occurred Saturday afternoon, Bianchi said, and the weapon was a knife.

Autopsy results showed Novellino died of blunt force trauma, the prosecutor said.
"You could definitely tell there was a struggle," Bianchi said of the home’s interior. "People were fighting during the attack.
"We have no reason to believe, based on the evidence that we have, that this was a random incident," Bianchi said. "We believe this victim was targeted."

Police today were searching for Anthony Novellino, 63, who had recently divorced from the victim but was still living at the Cliffside Trail home in the bucolic Indian Lake section of Denville.

Bianchi said Anthony Novellino is a "person of interest," not a suspect.

He was last seen driving a black Mazda Miata with a tan convertible roof, authorities said. The prosecutor said said anyone who spots Anthony Novellino should call "911," and that he "should not be approached."
Neighbors said the couple had lived on Cliffside Trail for at least 25 years, where their pale yellow split-level house is on a steep, winding street overlooking Indian Lake. A "for sale" sign hung on the garage door of the home.

Today was a contrast in scenes in the neighborhood: While children rode bicycles or swam in the lake, the Morris County Sheriff’s Office canine unit searched the area around the Novellino home and a small wooded area down the street. The street around the house was blocked off with yellow crime scene tape.
[...]
Lynn Dexter, 44, and Vlasta Pospisil, 77, both of whom live on Cliffside Trail, said they have each known the Novellinos for years. Dexter called Anthony Novellino "the mayor of Cliffside Trail," because he was outgoing and friendly and was always working in the garden. The women said he is employed as a security guard. Judith Novellino, they said, was rarely seen outside.

Pospisil said she learned recently that Judith Novellino had gotten her own apartment, and was traveling between it and the Cliffside Trail house to get her belongings. She said that last Wednesday Anthony Novellino came to her house to say he was divorced.
[...]
Dexter said she was barbecuing at around 7 p.m. Saturday when she saw the Novellinos’ daughter in the street, "walking around in a daze, crying." She said she overheard the woman saying, "I told her to wait for me. Why didn’t she wait for me?"

Judith Novellino had recently completed the school year at Morris Catholic High School, a parochial school of about 400 students in Denville. Members of the school community said they were saddened by the tragedy.

Novellino, whom colleagues called "Judie," was remembered today as a "good soul" who taught English, French and English as a Second Language during her 25 years at the school. She most recently worked as a librarian and ESL teacher and became a "wonderful mentor" to the school’s international students, former Morris Catholic President Judith Berg said.

"She had a very loving nature with students," Berg said. "She was friendly with everybody in the building. She had a lovely presence in the library."

Richard Sokerka, a spokesman for the Diocese of Paterson called the killing "a terrible, ter[...]rible tragedy," and said a Mass will be held Monday at the school for faculty and students. Grief counseling will be made available, although the school closed for the summer last week, Sokerka said.

"She was a good person, a wonderful person. It’s a tragedy," said Morris Catholic Athletic Director Kevin Murray. "Prayers and thoughts are with her and her family."

Denville is not too far from me. This story is all over the news here. They have state troopers posted on major routes leading to PA and NY looking for the ex-husband.

I feel so bad for her daughter (she's an adult). She's the one who found the body.

There is now speculation the motive may have been money.

According to the settlement, her husband would pay her $110,000 to buy out her share of their Denville home. She had been given a deadline of today to remove her belongings from the house.

PUYALLUP, Wa. (WPIX) - The estranged husband of a New Jersey school teacher found violently stabbed to death has been captured at a motel in Washington State early Friday morning, U.S. Marshalls told PIX 11 News.

Anthony Novellino, 62, was staying in Room 230 at Motel Puyallup when U.S. Marshalls stormed in and made the arrest. The motel is in Puyallup, Washington -- about 35 miles south of Seattle.

Mr. Novellino is a "person of interest" in his 62-year-old wife Judith Novellino's murder on June 19, according to police.

According to the Morris County Coroner's Office, Mrs. Novellino was bludgeoned and stabbed over 80 times inside the Cliffside Trail house in Denville, New Jersey she shared with her ex-husband. Mrs. Novellino's adult daughter discovered her mother's body and called the police.

Mrs. Novellino was officially divorced from Mr. Novellino the week earlier on June 8. Before the murder, neighbors told PIX 11 News Mr. Novellino was in the process of packing away his belongings.

Mr. Novellino is currently being held in Pierce County pending extradition to New Jersey. His capture comes on the same day of of Mrs. Novellino's wake in Denville

Morris County Prosecutor Robert A. Bianchi Esq. stated: "Mr. Novillino was arrested on a warrant issued out of Boonton Township for terroristic threats which were allegedly made against Judith Novellino's former divorce attorney. For the past five days, we have been pursuing numerous leads to find Mr. Novellino. He was captured without incident by the United States Marshalls and Puyallup Police Department after his car was located at a hotel in Washington State."

According to the motel's overnight auditor, Mr. Novellino checked into the motel on June 24 and paid $50 in cash for the room. His 1992 black Mazda Miata was found in the motel's parking lot.

Anthony Frank Novellino put the mask of a pig on his ex-wife's face after stabbing her 84 times at their Denville home and then left phone messages for a woman he met in a chat room as he fled across the country, authorities charged today.
[...]

One neighbor told police that Novellino mentioned ''that he would get the last laugh on Judith Novellino and he would be the last one to close the door on his house,'' the affidavit said.

Another neighbor stated to police that Novellino recently gave her a plant, saying he planned to put it on his ex-wife's grave but decided to give it away instead, the affidavit said.
[...]

Still another neighbor told police that Novellino asked her to call him if she ever saw Judith Novellino removing items from the house, the affidavit said.

The murder suspect, a security guard for Randolph Services, was tracked last Thursday, June 24, to a room at the Motel Puyallup in Puyallup, Washington. He initially was charged with making terroristic threats to his wife's divorce attorney, Marianne McGlone, and waived extradition.

He was returned to New Jersey late Monday night and charged Tuesday with the June 19 homicide. His bail has been set at $1,750,000, and a bail review tentatively is scheduled to occur Wednesday before Superior Court Judge David Ironson in Morristown.

Authorities learned that Novellino had struck up an on-line friendship with Lou Ann Spencer, a recent divorcee living in Puyallup, Washington. Spencer described their relationship as ''supportive,'' and told police they communicated through greeting cards on holidays and special occasions, and through e-mails and phone calls three or four times a week, the affidavit said.

The day of the killing, Spencer got a call from Novellino who told her he was traveling out to see her in Washington, the affidavit said.

The affidavit also describes a violent end for the beloved, long-time languages teacher for Morris Catholic High School. She was found stabbed 84 times, mainly in her right side around her neck and shoulder. Her body was found by her adult daughter around 7 p.m. on June 19, between the shower tub and the toilet.

The affidavit said the victim also was stabbed numerous times in the abdomen and a pig-faced Halloween mask had been placed over her face. The victim's son, 25, told police he remembered the mask but hadn't seen it in years, the affidavit said.

When Novellino was apprehended in the $54-a-night motel room around 6:30 p.m. PST, he had $3,738 in cash on him. He also had cuts on his right palm, bruised and swollen right knuckles, and a dark bruise and abrasion on his left arm pit, the affidavit said.

Authorities also searched his Mazda Miata and found suspected blood stains inside that will be tested by the State Police.

HOLY SHIT!! I can only think of two things after reading this...

Electric Chair and Gas Chamber

Yeah, wow... truly, looking at his picture I would never have pegged him as the type who'd be so coldly brutal as to be able to stab someone he once loved (I assume) over 80 times! I can't imagine ANYONE doing that! :dong:

Ha! I stay in Puyallup now lol. Its a really nice area. Old people and families. He would have fit in had he not gone all egotistical and murdered his ex wife over money.
