A Gainesville man was arrested on a warrant Thursday after police say he beat his wife so hard he lacerated her spleen and ruptured her large intestine.
Isiah Dunnum, 56, was arguing with his wife on June 8 about money when he began punching and kicking her, according to a criminal complaint from the Gainesville Police Department. His wife, 60, was hit multiple times in her midsection.
On June 14, Dunnum’s wife went to her doctor, experiencing fatigue and difficulty breathing. The next day, she was admitted into North Florida Regional Medical Center’s ICU, then transferred to UF Health Shands Hospital.
Doctors found that her spleen was lacerated and her large intestine had ruptured, and police say Dunnum’s attack was believed to be the only possible cause.
Dunnum’s wife had at least six surgeries to remove her spleen and segments of her large intestine. Her kidneys had also gone into renal failure.
