Two people, a Letts resident and an escapee from a work-release center, were arrested following a high-speed chase near Blue Grass Sunday afternoon that caused a police vehicle to collide with an SUV.
According to court documents, Brennen Merle Smith, 24, whose address was last reported as 1915 13th St., Moline, escaped from a work-release center in mid-April. On Sunday, at approximately 4 p.m. Smith was entering Muscatine County on U.S. Highway 61 in a stolen Trailblazer when an off-duty Blue Grass police officer alerted Sgt. Garrett Jahns of the Blue Grass Police Department to the stolen vehicle. When local police and Muscatine County Sheriff's deputies tried to pull Smith over, he refused to stop.

Smith led the officers in a high speed chase of up to 105 miles per hour, then turned back toward Scott County, nearly hitting three vehicles during the chase. Jahns ended the chase by conducting a PIT (Pursuit Intervention Technique) maneuver that forces a fleeing vehicle to turn sideways and stop.

The stolen vehicle then hit the an off-ramp exit sign and collided with a Blue Grass police vehicle. Both Smith and his passenger attempted to flee on foot before being caught.

The passenger, Amanda Marie Thompson, 20, is being charged in Scott County with theft in the first degree, a class C felony.

Smith has previous arrests in Scott, Muscatine and Louisa counties for charges including delivery of a controlled substance, parole violations, aggravated assault, and violation of no contact order.
