A gunman is on the loose after killing two broadcast journalists in a shooting that was captured on live television in Moneta, Virginia early Wednesday morning.

The gunman appears to have been targeting a television crew with local news station WDBJ, which caught the incident on live TV.

The incident happened at 6:45am as cameraman Adam Ward was filming reporter Alison Parker was interviewing another woman for a segment near Bridgewater Plaza.

Suddenly, about eight shots ring out and there are screams as the camera hits the floor. A person dressed in all black is then seen standing nearby with what appears to be a gun raised in one hand - pointed at Ward.

Both Ward and Parker died in the incident. Police previously reported that there were three injured, so there may be one survivor.

MONETA, VA – Local CBS news station WDBJ reporter Alison Parker and cameraman Adam Ward have died after being shot to death during a live broadcast.

Alison Parker, 24, was in the middle of an interview with Smith Mountain Lake Chamber Director VickiGardner at around 6:45 a.m. when a man walked up and fired about eight shots at Parker and her cameraman, 27-year-old Adam Ward.

You can see Parker reacting and screaming during these shots as the camera falls to the ground and captures a man in black pointing a handgun at Ward. The segment quickly cuts back to the news room to a very shocked anchor.

WDBJ’s general manager Jeff Marks would come on the air later to confirm that both Parker and Smith had been shot to death.

“We do not know the motive. We do not know who the killer is,” Marks said. “We do know that Franklin County sheriff… they are working very diligently to track down both the motive and the person responsible for this terrible crime against two fine journalists.”

The Franklin County Sheriff Department is saying that three people had been shot in the incident, so I am assuming VickiGardner was shot and is currently alive.

There are about 30 to 40 police officers in the area trying to find the suspect. No description of the man has been released yet. I am going to guess that Parker was the main target, and that the shooter will turn out to be either a disgruntled ex, or a stalker.

I heard it may have been a disgruntled employee. I am thinking jilted lover. Either way, whoa fucked up.

Twitter and Facebook accounts believed to belong to the suspect, under the name Bryce Williams, posted video of the shootings hours later, during the chase. Those accounts were quickly taken down.
The accounts also posted an apparent justification for the shootings, accusing the reporter of having made racist comments and the cameraman of having reported the suspect to human resources.

Cops caught up with him and he shot himself. It is not yet clear if he is injured or dead.

Just another asshole full of excuses for committing a crime.

He uploaded his video to Facebook. His page is already gone.
Jeebus. He held the gun up for a few seconds and NOBODY NOTICED.
Frightening.

Thanks @Valasca , knew I could count on someone to find the video.

Someone else should be a dear and find a screenshot of his Facebook post with the justification! Or, even better, his manifesto...

ABC News reported that it has received a fax containing a 23-page manifesto from someone named Bryce Williams, the news outlet tweeted. The document has been handed over to investigators, ABC said.

Watching the video, it quietly says "bitch" right before he raised and points the gun at her the first time, but before he shoots. It seems he stands/wanders about for another 20 seconds or so and then points and shoots.

Wow how tragically sad and unnecessary. It's called quitting if the people you work with piss you off or stop being an asshole if you piss your co workers off.

I'm dying to read the manifesto. Well, not literally dying.
Anyway, seems she might have called him a monkey. He says she's racist.

Flanagan was a former WDBJ reporter who was fired about two years ago.
Station manager Marks, speaking on air hours after the shooting, said Flanagan was "an unhappy man" who "quickly gathered a reputation of someone who was difficult to work with."

He was fired after "many incidents of his anger coming to the fore" and had to be escorted out of the building by police, Marks said. Shortly after that, Flanagan filed an EEOC complaint against the station.

As Flanagan's fate remained unclear after shooting himself, Marks told viewers: "I’m not sure if I want him to live or die ... If he dies, he takes the coward’s way out."
[...]
In the video, he appears to approach his three victims, lurk next to them for nearly a minute and then fire more than a dozen times. He whispers “Bitch” after pointing the gun at Parker.

In tweets days before the shooting, Flanagan posted pictures of himself as a child, teenager and former TV anchor. He also alluded to a modeling career and being raised as a Jehovah’s Witness.
[...]
The video disappeared from Facebook, and Flanagan’s Twitter account was suspended minutes after he posted the clip.
[...]
An eerie voicemail on a number listed for Flanagan assures callers they have reached Bryce Williams but called “the right number at the wrong time.”

“Presently I’m out communication with people, so sometimes that takes a little bit longer than expected,” Flanagan says.

He ends the message by telling callers to “always remember this scripture for the day: that this is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it. You have a blessed day.”

What is so wrong with folks that they believe they have permission to just kill whoever insults them. It's happening so much lately, someone insults you just kill 'em, cuts you off in traffic, kill 'em, stand near them laughing, kill the mfers, just WHY?!

This all happened like 30 to 45 minutes away from me. /= talk about scary. The news out here isn't saying much as far as I can tell.

@ Cubby, I wish I had the answer to that. I'm still stunned from watching the video that Valasca was able to post. We have become anesthetized and our sensibilities and emotions sleep instead of the waking outrage that should exist in every heart. Status Quo remains that any lunatic can legally buy and have a gun placed in their hands. This one said that Jehovah told him that it was time for him to act.

In Virginia they can't even get a bill out of the house for background checks.

I think he noticed the camera guy turn the camera to film the scenery and was waiting for him to turn the camera back on her so her death would be live on air.

"KPIX, the CBS station in San Francisco, said that Flanagan worked there as an intern and a writer from 1993 to 1995. An employee at WTOC in Savannah, Georgia, confirmed that Flanagan worked there in the late 1990s.
And in 2000, Flanagan sued a Florida station that had fired him, alleging racial discrimination, according to a newspaper report at the time.
"Vester was an unhappy man," Jeff Marks, the general manager of WDBJ, said on the station's noon newscast. "He had a reputation for being difficult to work with."
Marks said that Flanagan was fired "after many incidents of his anger coming forward" and was escorted from the building by police. His LinkedIn page said that he worked for WDBJ for a year, until February 2013.

A Virginia official says the man who shot a TV reporter and cameraman to death on live television Wednesday has died in hospital from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Vester Lee Flanagan, 41, of Roanoke was pronounced dead at the hospital at 1:26 p.m. local time, Franklin County Sheriff W.Q. "Bill" Overton Jr. said.

His "manifesto" has been released:

http://abcnews.go.com/US/shooting-alleged-gunman-details-grievances-suicide-notes/story

A man claiming to be Bryce Williams called ABC News over the last few weeks, saying he wanted to pitch a story, and wanted to fax information. He never told ABC News what the story was.

This morning, a fax was in the machine (time stamped 8:26 a.m.) almost two hours after the shooting. A little after 10 a.m., he called again, and introduced himself as Bryce, but also said his legal name was Vester Lee Flanagan, and that he shot two people this morning. While on the phone, he said authorities are “after me,” and “all over the place.” He hung up. ABC News contacted the authorities immediately and provided them with the fax.

In the 23-page document faxed to ABC News, the writer says “MY NAME IS BRYCE WILLIAMS” and his legal name is Vester Lee Flanagan II. He writes what triggered today’s carnage was his reaction to the racism of the Charleston church shooting:

“Why did I do it? I put down a deposit for a gun on 6/19/15. The Church shooting in Charleston happened on 6/17/15…”

“What sent me over the top was the church shooting. And my hollow point bullets have the victims’ initials on them."

It is unclear whose initials he is referring to. He continues, “As for Dylann Roof? You (deleted)! You want a race war (deleted)? BRING IT THEN YOU WHITE …(deleted)!!!” He said Jehovah spoke to him, telling him to act.

Later in the manifesto, the writer quotes the Virginia Tech mass killer, Seung Hui Cho, calls him “his boy,” and expresses admiration for the Columbine High School killers. “Also, I was influenced by Seung–Hui Cho. That’s my boy right there. He got NEARLY double the amount that Eric Harris and Dylann Klebold got…just sayin.'"

In an often rambling letter to the authorities, and family and friends, he writes of a long list of grievances. In one part of the document, Williams calls it a “Suicide Note for Friends and Family."

  • He says has suffered racial discrimination, sexual harassment and bullying at work
  • He says he has been attacked by black men and white females
  • He talks about how he was attacked for being a gay, black man

“Yes, it will sound like I am angry...I am. And I have every right to be. But when I leave this Earth, the only emotion I want to feel is peace....”

“The church shooting was the tipping point…but my anger has been building steadily...I’ve been a human powder keg for a while…just waiting to go BOOM!!!!”

That was a really eerie moment when he was just waving the gun around and no one even noticed.

This guy had a long history of problems with anger. Unfortunately, angry killers usually succeed in taking out innocent people before turning all that rage on themselves. My heart goes out to the families of all involved.

That's so bizarre how no one noticed him and how he sits there just pointing the gun. Tragic. Guess it could have been point blank on the back of the camera guys head. Fuckn crazy

I'm not even surprised that no one is saying that she wasn't an angel.
No, she didn't deserve death, but she helped make his life hell.
