Gemma Willis, 32, of Teesside, told how vile Richard Ridley, 29, once sliced her neck with a garden trowel, beat her until she became unconscious and smothered her entire body and hair in salad cream during his delusional attacks.

The jealous thug would also subject her to perverse examinations to check she hadn't been with another man and threatened to kill her and her family if she left him.

In June, Ridley appeared before Teesside Crown Court where he admitted two sexual assaults, two common assaults, two counts of criminal damage and one of affray.

He was jailed for 13-and-a-half years. Now Gemma has shared her story to encourage other abuse victims to come forward.

Gemma met Ridley in September 2014, after exchanging letters with him while he was in prison.

She explained: "I had been single quite a while when my friend suggested writing to Richard.

"He was a friend of hers who had got locked up for a few months for an assault, but she assured me he was actually a lovely lad.

"I wasn't convinced, but I also think you should give people a chance, and through our letters I was pleasantly surprised by how thoughtful and kind he seemed to be.

"I was already falling for him before I met him, but once I had there was no doubt at all in my mind that Richard was a lovable rogue with a good heart."

The couple enjoyed a whirlwind romance, with Ridley, a plasterer, moving in within a few months, but Gemma became concerned when he made little effort to find work.

She told how the romance quickly faded when his mates started coming round her house.

Gemma recalled: "I didn't like them and I didn't like the way he was around them, he was like a different man and I was certain they were giving him drugs, which I confronted him about and he denied."

Then one night in November 2014 Ridley came home after a night out and launched a vicious attack.

Gemma explained: "The look of rage on his face as he came in was terrifying. He screamed in my face that I'd had another man and called me a whore."

She told how Ridley then marched her outside into the snowy garden and pulled off her clothes until she was naked and shivering.

Gemma recalled: "He said, 'I'm going to check you haven't been with a man'. Then to my horror he thrust his fingers inside me in some kind of sickening internal examination.

Early in 2016 he beat her mercilessly when she refused to confess to an affair.

She recalled: "He grabbed a garden trowel and said 'I'll cut your head off,' thrusting it into the side of my neck.

"Immediately blood began to pour from the gash. Angered by my screams Richard used all his mighty strength to push me straight through the glass pane of the back door.

"He refused to let me go to hospital, picking the pieces of glass out of my back himself, telling me, 'These are the things you are making me do to you'."

    In prison for assault .

Exchanged letter while he was in prison.

    Whirlwind romance.

You let him move in within months.

He assaulted you in 2014 but yet you stayed with him until 2016.

    Dumb.

To bad she never paid attention to those brochures, news items, advice columns, billboards, all that information everywhere which says "don't let an unemployed ex-con live in your house. If he abuses you, immediately run like hell."

I wonder how many people advised her against getting involved with him, pleaded with her not to let him move in with her, pleaded with her to end the relationship as soon as he started acting bad.......and she said "You don't understand."

Well, now... I could see how this might happen, and how this might not be stupidity.

He was a friend of a friend. Depending on the nature of the assault, it could be conveyed as entirely justified, if not legal. They had been dating on the outside for a few months, quite successfully, with a friend surely saying, "See? I told you he was a good guy," when circumstance probably encouraged expediting things. None of us walk through life seeing the red flags in advance, 100% of the time. And then it was too late.

Once she's undergone an assault like that, leaving isn't necessarily an option. She surely had limited resources. The stereotype of the idiot woman who *believes he'll change* rarely applies to assault and dehumanization this vicious. It is not unreasonable to believe she didn't leave because she honestly felt like she couldn't.

    @Athena (I've missed you.)
while i respect what you're saying and i believe that is the case in a lot of DV cases. I don't think in this case.
    Here's why:
he has a prior assault so had she called the police in 2014 after that first vicious attack he would have been charged and she could have gotten an order of protection.

Some women stay because the man pays the majority of the bills and they lack the resources to end it.
That isn't the case here because he didn't get a job. So if she was already covering all the bills, it should be easy to cover them without the expense of him being there.

I think she was in love with the notion of being in love so she stayed in the abusive relationship.

Why is it that certain women always navigate to the bad ass? Is it loneliness, low self esteem?

That fucker needs his nut sack put in a vise grip and then pierced with an oily, rusty, crooked screw driver.

They exchanged letters while he was in prison. They met face to face in Sept 2014 and started a whirlwind romance. More like a tornado romance, his golden sheen rubbed off within a few weeks. She quickly became nervous about his unemployment, his bad associates, she suspected drug use. By November 2014, he screamed in her face, marched her out into the snowy backyard, stripped her naked and jammed his fingers up her vagina to find evidence that she was sleeping with someone else.
And she stuck it out until 2016.

She also chose to feel that she couldn't kick him out. I can't get up much sympathy for a victim when the red flags are so huge.

It's self respect. People used to not have self esteem, but they had self respect. Then someone decided that self esteem mattered more, and self respect became a bad word.

These prison romances are a kick in the nuts and a finger to every single man without a criminal record.
    WTF?
Women are so effed in the head that prison dick sounds like a good idea?
    REALLY?
Sorry but frankly I have less than zero empathy for this slow roasted nut of a dipshit bint.

Golly totally shocking he assaulted her,
given he was in the pokey for...
    ya know...
    assault!

As for him, he looks like a slow witted pillow biter.
Couple of cricket bat swings to the base of the skull should set him right.

I Met Richard in 2009 that bit is wrong. I had known him some year's and dated him previously, he was sent to prison for an assault when my friend mentioned he wanted me to write to him. Knowing Richard was a bit naughty for fighting thats all i thought it was. And No 1 told me not to get with him or to stay away. The thing's he done to me following the threats i wasn't risking what he said he was going to do which was burn my parent's house down and my youngest sister's house down with her and the two young boy's in not to mention one of which who spent his first few weeks in hospital and had only just been let home. And yes i knew i needed to get out and i tried i asked for help and was refused and i had nowhere to run or no1 to run to... Hope this clear's a few thing's up. Gem xx

In their cell mates mouth or they jerk off. I was in jail ... I never dyked out ... On the weekends we could stay in our cells or on the range all day ... My cell mate stayed on the range ... was happy to give me my space ... and privacy.

    I took 2 good beatings.
The first one, i called tbe police and he was arrested.
2 days later, he called me from jail and told me how sorry he was and that he is going to go to drug diversion and anger management and to please bail him out.
I fell for that bullshit and used my car title to bail him out.
In the car on the way home, he back handed me so hard it broke my nose. He wouldnt let me go to the ER. I walked my kids to the bus and we left to a friends house 100 miles away from him. 30 years later i still sport a slight crook to my nose.

So @Gemma Willis Please come in here and tell us why you stayed.

I'll bet he "charmed" her in the beginning and she fell for him. Here's a tip- when you feel that someone is very charming, it's not a good thing. This usually is a sign of inauthenticity, and is something to beware of. Here's another tip- women who were abused or neglected by their male parent or caregiver in childhood are particularly susceptible to being roped in by this behaviour. Professionals say these women should be very careful about their attractions to men until they receive intensive therapy, otherwise they replicate their dysfunctional childhood relationships by hooking up with men who will abuse them.

Whew! Didn't mean to get all "teachy"!!

Why can't women admit its the allure of the "bad boy"? Its an adrenal rush to brush with danger and come away safe. I understand this, that's why I ride my Harley, its why I love it when a thunderstorm pops up when I trail running and wish everyday I was back in the service on deployment. Its the thrill of doing something you love that is worthwhile that may also hurt you, but I know if I was to get injured I won't have anyone to blame but myself. Do a bit of self reflection instead of finding excuses.
