WINTER PARK, FLA. – Authorities say a 15-year-old boy who was attacked and beaten in an upscale part of Winter Park has died in a hospital.

Winter Park Police Lt. Pam Marcum said Roger Trindade, who had moved to the area years before from Brazil, was taken off life support Monday following the weekend attack, which happened on Saturday, just before 10 p.m.

Police have said the teen got into a confrontation with a group of juvenile males and was brain dead by the time he arrived at a hospital. No arrests have been made.

"This was not gang-related, this was not racially motivated, and certainly not a hate crime, at least that's what we're finding out so far," said Winter Park Police Chief Michael Deal during a news conference on Tuesday.

Deal said his officers are investigating the possibility that some sort of spray sparked this fight.

"There possibly was some kind of spray. We don't know what it was. We think it was mace or pepper spray. It was more of an odor spray that prompted maybe the altercation or confrontation," he said.

Police say the attackers could be students at a high school in the area. Trindade was a student from Brazil who attended Winter Park High School, as part of the International Baccalaureate Program.

Investigators and city officials insist this was isolated incident.

"At this point, there is no indication this group set out out kill somebody," Chief Deal said.

Trindade did not have any obvious signs of trauma on his body, according to investigators, but a police report stated that "weapons" used in the attack were hands, feet and fists.

"The Trindade family is very thankful for all the extended communities' thoughts and prayers," said Lt. Marcum, in a statement sent to FOX 35. "The family has requested privacy at this time to mourn the loss of their son."

A task force of detectives from agencies across central Florida is investigating the attack.

RIP Roger.

My condolences to his loved ones.

A witness told his attorney that his friend sprayed Trindade with skunk spray. Trindade and his friend then chased the pair, the witness said. The witness called other friends, and between four to six boys showed up, the witness said.

According to the statement, a boy punched Trindade, knocking him down.

The witness told how attorney that another boy then punched Trindade on his temple while he was on the ground.

Two teenagers convicted of killing a 15-year-old boy in Winter Park were sentenced Monday to a Department of Juvenile Justice rehabilitation program.

Jesse Sutherland and Simeon Hall were found guilty of manslaughter earlier this year in the 2016 beating death of Roger Trindade.

Last month, a judge decided that even though the two were tried as adults, they will be sentenced as juveniles. On Monday, the judge sentenced both teens to the DJJ High-Risk Commitment Program, where they could spend an average of nine to 12 months or more, depending on their behavior.

While in the program, the teens will stay at a rehabilitation facility.

High-risk residential programs "do not allow youth to have access to the community," and are "hardware-secure with perimeter fencing and locking doors," with no more than 90 beds per facility, according to the DJJ website.

After serving an undetermined amount of time they will both be put on conditional release, which could last until they turn 21 years old. How long they are on supervised, conditional release also depends on their behavior, according to the State Attorney's Office.

Disappointing. Not looking forward to seeing them released at all. Okay, you stole someone's shoes or some other dumb but non-lethal shit, fine go to the program, but you were way past that stage when you killed someone..

Tried as adults ... sentences as juveniles. I guess its up to them now.

I think one of them will make it ... one of them wont.

Like the boys that killed James Bulger. One of them is okay, healthy ... one of them is still bad.
