A Connecticut mother has been charged with murder after her 8-year-old son was suffocated before being found dead in a fire that police say she intentionally set.

Karin Ziolkowski, 40, was arrested and charged with murder and second-degree arson in relation to a house fire that killed her eight-year-old son Elijah Ziolkowsi in Meriden.

Ziolkowski was inside the home with her son when it caught fire on November 14, 2016.

Emergency personnel pulled the boy and his mother from a bedroom at the rear of the home, which they were going to be evicted from for not paying rent, The Gaston Gazette reported.

The boy was pronounced dead, and she was rushed to a nearby hospital. She stayed in the ICU for a few days before recovering and being released.

In the beginning, authorities thought the boy died from smoke inhalation.

But it has now been determined that he was killed prior to the fire being set and his death was ruled homicidal asphyxia, according to a press release from the Meriden Police Department.

Authorities say Ziolkowski moved to North Carolina after the deadly fire and that's where she was arrested.

She is currently in the Gaston County Jail and is awaiting to be extradited back to Connecticut.

The little boy was a third grader at the Israel Putnam School where he was well-liked by both staff and his classmates.

'Bubbly kid. You know, loves Star Wars, Legos. ... You know, a normal 8-year-old boy,' Enza Adamcewicz, the principal of the school, told WVIT.

'He was very social. ... Everybody knew him, knew of him. Big personality and he will be greatly missed.'

A judge has ordered a second competency evaluation for a Meriden woman accused of killing her 8-year-old son before setting their home on fire in 2016.

Karin Ziolkowski, 42, who faces murder and second-degree arson charges, appeared in New Haven Superior Court on Tuesday. According to statements in court, a competency evaluation was previously ordered and completed. However, the person that conducted the evaluation is no longer available to testify. Judge Patrick Clifford ordered a second evaluation and continued the case to Oct. 23. Ziolkowski remains held on $1 million bond.

Ziolkowski is accused of suffocating her 8-year-old son before setting fire to their home using torch oil on Nov. 14, 2016, according to her arrest warrant.

Authorities arrested her nearly a year later in North Carolina and charged her in the death. The cause of death was ruled homicidal asphyxia and acute intoxication from an antihistamine. The medical examiner determined the boy was dead prior to the fire.

A Meriden mother was found guilty on Tuesday of killing her 8-year-old son and intentionally setting two fires in their home in 2016, according to a statement from New Haven State’s Attorney John P. Doyle, Jr.

A jury found Karin Ziolkowski guilty of murder and second-degree arson.
According to evidence and testimony during the trial, Ziolkowski suffocated her 8-year-old son, Elijah Ziolkowski, in their Meriden home on Nov. 14, 2016, then intentionally set two fires — one in the bedroom and another in the basement. The fire marshal had determined that tiki torch fluid was used to start the blaze.

The child was not able to be resuscitated on scene and his death was ruled a homicide by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, according to court records. The medical examiner determined the boy died of both asphyxiation and a lethal dose of an antihistamine, commonly found in Benadryl, officials said in 2016.
Ziolkowski was arrested in October of 2017 in North Carolina. Arrest records indicated that she was struggling with depression and marital issues before Elijah was killed.
In the weeks before Elijah’s death, a judge dismissed a divorce case between Karin Ziolkowski and her husband for lack of diligence. Karin Ziolkowski’s stepmother alleged that her husband was verbally abusive, something Karin later told investigators, according to previous reports.

The mother that murdered her 8-year-old son Elijah in Meriden back in 2016 has been sentenced to 40 years in prison.

Karin Ziolkowski was sentenced to 40 years incarceration on the murder charge and to 10 years incarceration on the arson charge. All sentences are to be served concurrently, for a total effective sentence of 40 years of incarceration.
According to evidence introduced at the trial, Ziolkowski asphyxiated her son while in their Meriden home on November 14, 2016. She then intentionally set two fires in the home. The child was not able to be resuscitated on scene and his death was ruled a homicide by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
