SYDNEY: An elderly Australian man serving time for killing his wife and two grandchildren was charged Tuesday (Jan 3) with the murder of a fellow inmate after an apparent attack with a sandwich toaster.

John Walsh, 77, is alleged to have beaten Frank Townsend in their shared cell at a correctional facility for aged prisoners near Sydney. Local reports said he used a sandwich toaster.


A guard was alerted to the injured inmate late Monday after hearing noises coming from their cell.

"The officer switched the cell light on and saw the 71-year-old had been assaulted," a spokeswoman from New South Wales Corrective Services said, adding that Townsend was rushed to hospital but later died.

In 2008, Walsh was sentenced to life in jail for the gruesome murder of his wife and young grandchildren.

He beat his wife and seven-year-old grandson to death and drowned his five-year-old granddaughter in the bath, while attempting to kill his daughter with an axe.

I thought so but wasnt quite a toaster it was a sandwich/panini press (in a pillow case apparently)

I remember his first arrest, it was awful his daughter was a police officer who moved in with her parents to help out and survived her injuries.

Fucking vile how inept the authorities "running" this prison are. They should all be brought in on charges for this, their negligence and failure to effectively control and secure and provide for a safe environment for those under their care resulted in this mans death.

I'm guessing this guy, who had absolutely no Fucks to give, who had not one problem in killing his wife, grandchildren and nearly daughter, didn't have anything to lose, so he did what he wanted to do. Maybe at this point in his life he wanted to sleep alone in his own space, without a needy, snoring roommate.
