Melissa Bonkoski, 38, an earth science teacher at Owen J. Roberts High School in Pottstown was charged with eight felonies on Thursday. The charges include “three counts of institutional sexual assault, three counts of unlawful contact with a minor; one count of corruption of minors and one count of criminal use of a communication facility,” according to the Daily Local.

Bonkoski allegedly became "obsessed" with a 16-year-old student and used a "burner phone," or a prepaid phone, to talk to him.

“Whatever you do, please don’t shut me out,” Bonkoski texted the student in March, according to the Daily Local. “I’m begging you.”

Bonkoski told a Pennsylvania State Trooper that she "thought she was being smart" to use a burner phone so officials could not trace it back to her.

The Owen J. Roberts School District was informed of the charges Friday and have since deleted Bonkoski’s about me page from their website. The district asked the woman to resign.

“Upon learning of the filing of these charges, the school district asked for, and received, Bonkoski’s immediate resignation from her employment as a teacher,” Anthony Costello, the district’s acting superintendent, told the Daily Local.

Bonkoski was in her “second year teaching earth science” at the school and had previously taught in Miami, Fla. and West Philadelphia, according to her biography page on the district’s website.

A Chester County Court judge was not swayed by former Owen J. Roberts High School teacher Melissa A. Bonkoski's plea for mercy that she had sex with a male student to relieve the stress of caring for her ailing sister.

"I don't feel like you are dealing with this as serious as it is," Judge Ann Marie Wheatcraft said before sentencing Bonkoski to 11½ to 23 months in Chester County Prison followed by five years of probation.

In imposing the maximum sentence, the judge also ordered Bonkoski to report her residence to state police for 25 years after she is freed from jail. She is also required to surrender her license to teach.

Bonkoski, who was a science teacher and softball coach, was then handcuffed and escorted from the courtroom to begin serving her sentence on charges of institutional sexual assault, unlawful contact with a minor, and corrupting minors.

Bonkoski started communicating with the student and his mother by talking on the telephone about the student's schoolwork.

In March 2016, Bonkoski started sending flirtatious text messages to the student using a "burner phone," which is a disposable cellphone.

The teacher said that she did not think that the phone would provide a record of the conversations. Bonkoski gave the student rides home and she kissed him.

By December 2016, the teacher lured the victim to have sex with her in her home.
