MONUMENT, Colo. (CBS4) – A suspected drunk driver slammed into a minivan early Thursday morning, seriously injuring the family four and crushing their plans for a surprise vacation.

Ryan Bragazzi was driving his fiancé and two young daughters to Denver International Airport for a surprise trip to Disney World when they were hit.

“They did absolutely nothing wrong and they received the brunt end of this for just being in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Colorado State Patrol Trooper Josh Lewis told CBS4’s Karen Morfitt.

The crash happened just north of Monument around 2:30 a.m. While stopped in traffic as troopers investigated a separate DUI crash, another drunk driver collided with Bragazzi’s minivan at a high rate of speed. That collision forced the van underneath a semi.

“The result was serious injuries on multiple parties. We’re certainly hoping for the best with everyone who was involved with it,” Lewis said.

All four passengers, including the 5 and 7-year-old girls, were taken by ambulance to an area hospital. According to a GoFundMe pagecreated by a relative, Bragazzi is in the ICU with several broken ribs, vertebrae and a laceration to his back. His young daughters are being treated at a Children’s Hospital.

“A DUI can happen at any time at any location,” Lewis said. “It is not limited to just a Friday or Saturday night or a special weekend.”

What was supposed to be a special weekend for the young family turned into a horrifying scene. Medical bills are mounting, so relatives are hoping to raise $8,000 to help.

Jesus. I mean, there's no good time to be struck by a drunk driver, obviously, but some times sure do sound worse than others. I hope this family gets tons of support and a shot at another trip as soon as possible.

Thank goodness nobody was killed. I hope the family can pull through.
Right? Looking at those pics I immediately assumed this was going to be one of those awful decapitation stories. What a fun, loving family to plan a surprise trip to Disney world. I'm not a spiritual person but this feels like some version of karma was at play in keeping them alive. I hope some generous souls (I'm broke as shit but would love to contribute) help them not only pay off their medical bills but get them a free trip to Disney. I can dream can't I?

Looks like there were two surprises that day.

I hope they heal and then get to go see Mickey Mouse at the Happiest Place On Earth.

I'm thankful this family survived...I was surprised anyone had when I first saw the pic. I hope they all heal and get their dream trip too.

Remember back in the day Otis the drunk in Mayberry would stumble into the jail and lock himself in because he knew he was too drunk to be on the loose?

.....
Pepperidge Farm remembers

Drunk drivers are a plague.
Pull the license on first offence...
If you cannot hold your shit, don't tip a glass.
There is no excuse.
None.
Zero.
