Love them or hate them, they are a firm fixture on most Christmas dinner plates, but it seems the humble Brussels sprout is under threat.

A marauding moth - the diamondback - arrived in the UK earlier than expected this year and in unprecedented numbers.

Its larvae munch their way through the leaves of sprouts at a devastating rate.

Farmers in Northern Ireland are seeing the damage too.

Brussel sprouts are a staple christmas dinner food in england/ireland? That's fucking weird.

I live in brussel sprout country. Yum. The last harvest was before thanksgiving, they plowed the stalks under, or feed them to cattle. Sulphury cabbage smell in the air.
Put lots of sprouts in a heavy casserole, lay strips of bacon across the top. Roast in very hot oven for 30 minutes. Yum.
Usually what turns people off sprouts is the smell from boiling them. Roasting doesn't smell up the house and they taste sweeter.

Steam them, cut them in two, and drown them in butter for a feast.

But don't feed them to the dog. Or cat.
