An elderly Chicago couple found stabbed to death early Sunday in their West Side home were killed by their 47-year-old son, Cook County prosecutors said in court Tuesday.

Dexter Barnes has been charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of Johnnie and Shirley Ervin, his biological parents.

Barnes' brother came to check on the Ervins at their North Austin home in the 1400 block of North Leclaire Avenue in the early hours of Sunday morning, Assistant State's Attorney Jamie Santini said in court Tuesday.

When he arrived at his parents' apartment, he found their bodies on the kitchen floor, surrounded by 12 knives, Santini said.

Johnnie Ervin, who used a walker, had been stabbed 11 times and disemboweled, prosecutors said. He was 73, prosecutors said.

Shirley Ervin, 69, had dementia, prosecutors said. She was stabbed in the chest, and her body was found with her dress pulled up and her adult diaper pulled down, Santini said.

Both were pronounced dead on the scene, authorities said.

Barnes had a history of domestic violence against his mother, who had an order of protection against him that expired in November, Santini said.

Barnes was found with blood on his clothing and cuts on his hand; in addition, he had his father's wallet on him, Santini said.

He initially told police he had gotten in a fight with his brother, then later claimed the cuts on his hands were sustained when his elderly parents attacked him and he had to defend himself, prosecutors said.

Barnes appeared in court Tuesday in a torn white shirt. Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. shook his head as the details of the case were read into the record.

"These unimaginable facts speak for themselves, sir," Bourgeois said before denying bail.

Barnes has an extensive criminal history, records show.
