A man has died after he was restrained by members of the public as he attempted to rob a jeweller's store, police have said.

Two men targeted John Gowing Jewellers in the Covered Market, Oxford, in an attempted robbery on Saturday.

One of the men, Clint Townsend, 33, from Headington, Oxford, was restrained. He was taken to hospital where he died on Sunday.

Two men, aged 31 and 32, have been arrested on suspicion of robbery.

They were later released on bail.

A Thames Valley Police spokesman said two men wearing motorcycle helmets raided the shop at 09:15 GMT.

The second man managed to flee.

Det Supt Chris Ward, who is leading the investigation, said: "We know that the offenders arrived at the Covered Market on a motorcycle and then one of the men pushed the bike as they walked towards the jewellers.

"This motorcycle is a green Kawasaki ZX600, registration S618 UCL, and was stolen from an address in Botley Road at around 11:00 GMT on 27 March."

It is believed that nothing was stolen in the raid.

Witnesses at Oxford Coroner's Court could not agree on how many people were involved in apprehending the 33-year-old.

One described up to eight people trying "to stop him getting away".

Others described just three people holding down the suspect - John Gowing, a second worker at the jewellery shop and a man who worked at a nearby cafe.

Several witnesses who took to the stand, including shopkeepers and shoppers, told the court two men had ridden a motorbike into the pedestrianised Covered Market just before 09:15 BST on Saturday 30 March.

A robber who died after an attempted raid on an Oxford jewellers did not need CPR because police believed he was still breathing, an inquest heard.

The court also heard from pathologist Dr Ashley Fegan-Earl, who said he was medically obese and was suffering from coronary heart disease.

He said restraint had definitely played a part in his death but it was perfectly plausible that had he not had heart disease it would not have had such a devastating effect.

The inquest heard he ended up on the floor still wearing his helmet and motorcycle gear.

The death of a robber who was restrained by passersby after a bungled raid has been recorded as misadventure.

On Tuesday the court heard from pathologist Dr Ashley Fegan-Earl, who said Mr Townsend was obese and suffering from coronary heart disease.

He said restraint had definitely played a part in his death but it was perfectly plausible that had he not had heart disease it would not have had such a devastating effect.

Mr Townsend's sister Hailey said after the inquest: "He will be greatly missed. His death has left a massive hole in our hearts. We are still considering the coroner's verdict."

He needed to have kept his fat ass at home and not out TRYING to rob a business then he wouldn't have been died like he did. Family needs to consider that.

And then there was the sledgehammer they were trying to bash the window in with. I have been in the covered market in Oxford many a time, and those stalls are not at all deep. When they took a sledgehammer to those windows, anyone inside would have been showered with bits of glass.....

Wow, vigilantes at their best. What's funny is he was so fat i'm pretty sure 8 people or more didn't need to restrain him. lol

You would think that a better disguise would have been used. Motorcycle helmets are pretty awkward.
