Authorities say an intruder barged into a Southern California beach home and fatally stabbed a man and his pregnant wife in front of their 9-year-old son.

The boy and his 11-year-old sister, who was asleep in another room, were not injured.

Sheriff's Capt. Ross Bonfiglio says the intruder entered the expensive Ventura County house in unincorporated Faria Beach through a sliding-glass door Tuesday night and repeatedly stabbed Brock and Davina Husted. Investigators don't think the family knew the intruder.

The Husteds were both 42 years old. Sheriff's Capt. Bruce Norris says Davina Husted was four to five months pregnant.

No arrests have been made.

Police said a man wearing a motorcycle helmet entered the house through an unlocked door on the 4500 block of Faria Beach Road and confronted Davina Husted in the kitchen at about 10:30 p.m.

Her husband, who was in a bedroom, heard the commotion and went to check on his wife. The suspect stabbed both of them multiple times in the torso
Both parents died at the scene.

Police said the victims' 9-year-old son witnessed the slaying at the beachfront home. The boy ran and woke up his 11-year-old sister, and they both ran to a neighbor's house.

Brock Husted's brother Scott Husted said the victims were a loving couple with no known enemies. He said he believes this was a random attack.

Not that it really makes matters better for them, but at least they didn't have to watch it happen:

Authorities believe the killer saw Davina Husted first and attacked her. They initially thought the boy saw the attack, but sheriff's Sgt. Dave Murray later said the child ran into another room and didn't witness the killings, but did find the bodies.

Davina Husted, 42, was in the kitchen, the father, Brock Husted, 42, was in a bedroom and the boy was watching television when the intruder entered the expensive house in unincorporated Faria Beach through a sliding-glass door, sheriff's Capt. Ross Bonfiglio said.

The parents' bodies were found in the back of the one-story Ventura County home, he said. Sheriff's Capt. Bruce Norris said Davina Husted was four to five months pregnant. No arrests have been made.

"There's no answers as to why this happened," said Scott Husted, Brock's brother. "It's a horrible situation and there's a killer out there that killed a man and his wife _ his pregnant wife _ with two small children in the home."

Investigators believe the killer was not known to the family, Bonfiglio said. A beach camping area is located just west of the home.

Authorities believe the killer saw Davina Husted first and attacked her. They initially thought the boy saw the attack, but sheriff's Sgt. Dave Murray later said the child ran into another room and didn't witness the killings, but did find the bodies.

The boy and his older sister then ran out of the house and told a neighbor about the attack, Murray said. It wasn't immediately known if anything had been stolen from the house.

Family friend Robyn Asdel said Brock Husted, who owned a wrought-iron business, was a family man, while his wife was involved in her children's school activities and was excited about the coming birth of their baby.

"She was a great role model to her children and all of our kids," Asdel said. "They will both be missed."

The well-manicured beach-front home sits along a narrow stretch of U.S. Highway 101 about 80 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

Man arrested in home invasion slaying

CNN) -- Police have made an arrest in the home invasion slaying last year of a Southern California couple in their beach house, authorities said Monday.

Joshua Graham Packer, 20, of Ventura is facing charges including three counts of murder and two counts of robbery, Capt. Ross Bonfiglio of the Ventura County Sheriff's Department said.

Bonfiglio said the Ventura County Sheriff's Department will discuss more details at a news conference Monday.

Packer is accused of murdering Brock Husted, his wife, Davina Husted, and her fetus. The Husteds, who were both 42, were stabbed to death in their seaside home in Faria Beach, California, on May 20.

Until the couple's slaying, the gated community of luxury homes had not recorded a homicide in 15 years, police said.

According to investigators, the Husteds were home with their two young children on the night of the slaying. Their daughter was asleep in bed, and their son was watching "American Idol" in the living room.

About 10:30 p.m., the suspect entered the home through French doors that face the ocean, police said.

The killer was dressed in dark clothing and wore a motorcycle helmet, authorities said. He walked past the child who was watching television and stabbed the Husteds.

Looking forward to information on a motive. While robbery is listed as one of the charges, I just can't imagine that is all there is to it.

Agreed, Athena. I don't think the victims were part of anything nefarious or anything (I'd think it would have turned up by now and been widely sensationalized seeing as they were an attractive, apparently wealthy (gated community, so I'd assume from my admittedly poorish rural background), and Caucasian couple. The story is just terrifying and attention grabbing anyway, so by now something would have turned up, even if just a rumor. Again, all assumption of course.

However, usually "robberies" are crimes of opportunities and maybe brutal aftermaths born out of fear and confrontation--this guy seemingly walked into an obviously occupied/active home. Perhaps he was stalking the woman, or something like that. It just seems so random otherwise.

Regardless, I'm glad the kids made it out okay physically, though they will be wounded for a very long time from that night. :(

New charge: Joshua Graham Packer, 22, is now charged with sexual assault; he also faces the death penalty if convicted of two murders
Home invader 'sexually assaulted wealthy pregnant woman before he stabbed her and husband to death in front of their terrified children' Joshua Graham Packer, 22, now faces additional charge of sexual assault
Already charged with murdering Brock and Davina Husted, both 42, in multimillion-dollar California beach home
Davina, former Miss California contestant, was also pregnant with third child at time of murder

Packer faces death penalty or life in prison if convicted in 2009 killings

A new count of sexual assault has been added to charges against a 22-year-old man facing trial in the stabbing deaths of an affluent couple and their unborn child in their multi-million-dollar Southern California beach house.
Joshua Graham Packer was indicted last week by a grand jury for forcing a pregnant Davina Husted to perform a sex act on him before she was stabbed to death.
Packer is facing a death penalty trial on accusations that he killed Brock and Davina Husted and their unborn child inside their Faria Beach home on May 20, 2009.
Packer appeared in court Monday on the latest indictment, but arraignment was postponed until May 16.
The prosecutor and defence lawyer wouldn't comment.
The case has sparked national interest, in part because Ventura County, California – otherwise known as the Gold Coast – is one of the safest neighbourhoods in the country.
[...]

Packer, who pleaded not guilty to the crimes, faces the death penalty if convicted, but can also be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, the Ventura County Star said.
Scene photos following the gruesome murders show a community struck by shock and grief.
The Star reported that both the husband and wife had been stabbed multiple times – Mr Husted was stabbed more than 20 times, and his wife, more than 30.
[...]
The boy woke his sister and together, they checked on their parents' bodies. The children then locked the bedroom door and escaped through a window to a neighbour’s home.
DNA evidence links Packer to Mrs Husted, and more of his DNA was found under Mr Husted’s fingernails.
The couple married in 1995. Mr Husted ran a custom-design wrought iron shop that catered to high-end clients, an extremely lucrative business.
Mel Gibson and Oprah Winfrey were some of his clients, according to NBC's Dateline.
Mrs Husted, a former Miss California contestant, was expecting her third child in the fall of 2009. The couple were planning on naming the child Grant.
Mr Husted’s brother Scott told NBC’s Dateline in 2010 that the murders were baffling.

Moment of grief: Pallbearers carry the coffins of the couple out at the funeral in 2009

From the article above:
According to court documents, the the couple’s 9-year-old son tried to give Packer his mother’s purse to stop the killing.
:(
That's all I got.

  • Such a great family and some had to die because of one selfless idiot! Was a worth it? No! Of course not, but what does he care. He would still be doing the same thing if he wasn't caught. Because him getting a job would be to much to ask for!

We vacation at the beach often but just because people own multi-million dollar homes there doesn't mean it's safe. It's the beach...it brings in ALL types. Transients are as common as millionaires. Once it's dark I'm pretty cautious, no matter of the zip code.
I couldn't help but envision us at our little rental & some whackjob barging in. Sometimes I think the scariest crimes are the ones you can see happening to you.

This is the first time I saw this story.
