Blogger accused of sneaking into nursing home, taking photo of Sen. Cochran's bed-ridden wife

A Mississippi man snuck into the nursing home of Republican Sen. Thad Cochran's bed-ridden wife, then took a photo of her that he posted on his political blog, police say.

The suspect, Clayton Thomas Kelly, 28, of Pearl, Miss. was arrested Friday night on a charge of exploitation of a vulnerable adult and is being held on a $100,000 bond, according to theClarion-Ledger newspaper.

The 76-year-old Cochran is in a hotly-contested Mississippi GOP primary in which he is fighting against a strong challenge from Tea Party-backed state Sen. Chris McDaniel.

Donald Clark, a lawyer representing Cochran and wife Rose, said he and his clients notified authorities after seeing the image, which was part of a video targeting Cochran.

Cochran, elected to Congress in 1973, remains popular among voters for the billions in federal money he has brought home. Most polls show him holding a double-digit lead with the June 3 primary just weeks away.

On Saturday, the 42-year-old McDaniel made clear that Kelly was not associated with his campaign and condemned his actions.

"I've reached out to Senator Cochran directly to express my abhorrence for the reprehensible actions of this individual,” he said in a statement. “This criminal act is deeply offensive and my team and I categorically reject such appalling behavior. My thoughts and prayers are with Senator Cochran and his family.

"Politics is about the exchange of ideas, and this type of action has no place in politics whatsoever and will not be tolerated."

Kelly purportedly posted the video April 26 on his "Constitutional Clayton" blog, but it was removed within hours.

Rose Cochran has dementia and has been staying at the St. Catherine's Village facility in Madison, Miss. since 2000.

Clark’s statement also said St. Catherine's is conducting its own investigation.

Cochran, who is seeking a seventh term, reportedly cancelled his public appearances at least through Saturday.

I would be so fucking pissed that he got into the nursing home. PERIOD. How the fuck did he get in there, the staff needs to be held accountable on how this dipshit was able to get in there and take of pic of this woman that has not done anything to him. He could have gotten in there to do something else for all they know.

Exactly the nursing home up the street security at the front door and door by the rec area. if any door besides that opens alarms go off that can be heard inside and outside.

Please remember to quote articles. Also, it's not a good idea to cut and paste an entire article -- just give us the good stuff. :p

Suggestions for posting an article in the Den can be found right here. Thank ya!

This was a terrible violation of this woman's human rights. This guy just ruined his career by doing this. I would seriously consider moving my family member to a more secure facility where she can't be exploited so easily...especially in light of what just happened.

I bet Fox "News" will hire him....but this guy is a POS of the lowest order.

Dear Mr.Asshat McDouchbag,
That poor woman is not a political pawn, I hope someone takes a picture of you in a vulnerable state and then posts it for some sort of limited pointless gain. I hope some one shoves eggs up your butt and then stomps on your colon. Eat a blue waffle.
Sincerely,
Me

He might have helped the Senator's campaign more than he helped his side. No one but no one will condone what he did, especially if the whole wide world knows about it. He just learned a really big lesson, they all love you until they don't, and then they hate you with the heat of a thousand suns!

If you look at the comments all over the news stories, they want to lynch him!

Nobody will ever touch him with a 10 ft pole, not even Fox.

What career? He probably lives in his mom's basement, spending all his time blogging... If he's as stupid as he seems, he probably wouldn't be bothered to keep his employment history private on Facebook, and his Timeline/Info shows nothing in that department.

What a scumbag. I hope the other inmates teach him that he doesn't want to do anything that might get him sent to jail again.

And....he's taking care of her and has her in a good place where's she's comfortable. Where's the story?

A prominent lawyer and leader of the Mississippi Tea Party, who was arrested in connection with photos posted online of U.S. Senator Thad Cochran's bedridden wife, died on Friday of an apparent suicide, the man’s attorney said.

Mark Mayfield, 58, was a founding member of the state's Tea Party and had served as its vice chairman, the organization said.

"This is a terrible tragedy that shouldn’t have happened," Mayfield's lawyer and brother-in-law, John Reeves, told Reuters.

Mayfield was one of three men accused in May of conspiring with a blogger to illicitly take photos of Cochran's wife, who has dementia, in her nursing home for use in a political video against the six-term incumbent.

Mayfield was charged with conspiracy to photograph someone without permission, an allegation met with shock and some skepticism in the legal community where he was highly regarded.

Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant was among those who expressed sadness on Friday, calling Mayfield a long-time friend.

“A good number of us just simply refused to believe that he had anything to do, at least on any criminal level, with what happened with the nursing home scandal,” said attorney Matt Eichelberger, who blogs about progressive politics in the state.

Mayfield's death comes after state Senator Chris McDaniel, who had the backing of conservative Tea Party groups, lost a bitterly contested primary runoff against Cochran on Tuesday for the Republican Senate nomination.
[...]
Coxwell said he last spoke with Mayfield on Wednesday, when they discussed the criminal case but not the results of Tuesday's election. He said he had urged Mayfield to be patient.

“I don’t know what was on his mind,” Coxwell said. “I guess just being charged, for a man of Mark’s kind sensibilities, was too much.”

Senseless, just fucking senseless. I don't know what they meant to gain by taking a pic of that poor woman. I wonder what Clayton has been up to.
