Police on a Caribbean holiday island have shot dead two men during a bungled kidnap attempt on a Brit.

The pair were said to have been killed during a firefight after trying to take a 49-year-old named locally as John Basil Valentine from an upmarket area of the Dominican Republic capital Santo Domingo.

A 9mm Browning pistol was found on the first of the two alleged kidnappers, named as 34-year-old Samuel Aristides Melo Torres.

The second suspect killed, named as Teodoro Samuel Melo Cuevas, was reportedly carrying a Taurus pistol.

The incident happened in an exclusive area of Santo Domingo called Bella Vista as police tried to arrest the men suspected of holding the Brit against his will. It is not known if he lived on the island or was on holiday.

Another man, 45-year-old Fred Antonio Guerra Acevedo known by the nickname El Don or El Jefe which is Spanish for ‘The Boss’, was injured in the resulting firefight and is now under police guard in hospital.

Four other men aged 20 to 40 were arrested.

Local reports said three vehicles including a Nissan Pathfinder belonging to Mr Valentine were recovered.

The motive behind the apparent kidnap attempt, and when it occurred, were not immediately clear.

Police said they were still investigating.

This many guys arrested, including one named "the boss", means this brit no doubt had some shady business goin on himself. There was more to this plan then just a run of the mill, "let's grab and ransom a westerner".

I have no sympathy for anyone who chooses to vacation in third world shit holes.
