A 39-year-old Corona man remained locked up in a hospital jail ward today on suspicion of stabbing to death his baby girl and his 6-year-old daughter, and trying to kill his wife.
Amado Acevedo Esqueda was cut or stabbed himself during the attack in the
family's home in the 700 block of Via Paraiso Circle around dawn Saturday, police said.
Esqueda was held today on $1 million bail at a secure hospital unit at Riverside County Regional Medical Center in Moreno Valley, a jailer in Riverside said in a phone interview.
Esqueda was booked just after 10 p.m. Saturday on two counts of murder and count of attempted murder.
It was unclear what triggered the violence on Saturday morning. Neighbors could not recall hearing fights at the home and described the family as happy.
The 33-year-old mother of the children, identified by a relative as Irene Gonzalez, apparently called 911 at 6:48 a.m., saying she and her children were being stabbed.
Shortly afterward, a neighbor heard the woman shouting ``muerte, muerte, muerte'' -- dead in Spanish.
Her 2-month-old daughter and 6-year-old daughter were slain. Their names had not been released as of this morning, a coroner's investigator said.
The woman underwent surgery and was said to be in serious condition.
``Her screams of sheer terror woke us up,'' Johanna Lawson, 64, told one newspaper. ``She was so hysterical.''
The neighborhood is normally peaceful, Lawson said.
``They were always laughing and such a happy family.''
Two teenage children from a previous marriage of Gonzalez's were not at the home at the time of the attacks, according to published reports.
