"A man out on bond in the 2016 death of a Houston teenager is accused in a second killing, according to court records.
After spending four years in the Harris County Jail, 23-year-old Edward O’Neal IV in August was freed on a lowered bond tied to the first murder charge. O’Neal’s case was pending trial in Felony Mental Health Court for the stabbing death of his 16-year-old friend Ryan Roberts, whose body was found in a wooded area in 2016.
O’Neal was charged Saturday in the death of his cousin’s ex-boyfriend, Derrick Mike, court records show. Investigators believe O’Neal shot him multiple times around 11 p.m. Nov. 28 in the parking lot outside the cousin’s apartment in the 6900 block of West Montgomery Road.
Mike was conscious and describing his assailant to patrol officers before being rushed to a hospital, where he died the next day.
The cousin told police that Mike was there to collect his belongings and move out.
Police contend O’Neal confessed to his mother following both killings. The mother said her son told her he killed Mike at the request of his cousin — who believed Mike had cheated on her, court records show. She then told authorities “that her son has mental issues and that she is afraid of what else he may do,” a Houston police investigator revealed in probable cause documents.
The cousin revealed to investigators that she had a handgun in her apartment and that she could not find it following the shooting. She heard the gunfire but did not see the shooting, she said."
