A man has been killed in a machete attack and two suspects shot by police in Woolwich, south-east London.

The Met Police said a murder inquiry was being led by its Counter Terrorism Command. Prime Minister David Cameron said the UK would "never buckle" in the face of terror attacks.

Footage has emerged showing a man wielding a bloodied meat cleaver and making political statements.

Police confirmed two men had been arrested in connection with the murder.

There are unconfirmed reports that the dead man was a soldier.

'They started slashing him up with the knife and hitting him in the stomach with the machete. I don't think it took long before he was dead. There were people passing by who were screaming and running away. I've never seen anything like it.

'I'm still really shaken up. When he was dead, they dragged him out into the road and left him there. It was strange, they didn't run off, they just stood there as if they were waiting for the police.

'It must have taken about 20 minutes for the police to arrive, I think it must've been because they were waiting for armed police.

'The police officers got out of the car and the two black men ran towards them with the gun.

'The police shot them. They fell to the ground. Then a helicopter landed. Think it must've been an air ambulance.

'The paramedics got out and I think they were working on the two men to try and keep them alive.

'I don't know if they died, they were taken away in the helicopter. A blanket was put over the white guy lying in the road. 'I just can't believe what I saw.'

Man Hacked To Death With Meat Cleavers Outside British Army Base

They first hit the man, thought to be a British soldier, with a car in broad daylight. Then the two attackers hacked him to death and dumped his body in the middle of a southeastern London road.

As the victim -- dressed in what appeared to be a T-shirt for Help for Heroes, a charity that helps military veterans -- lay prone, one of the two attackers found a camera.

"We swear by almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you," said a meat-cleaver-wielding man with bloody hands, speaking in what seems to be a London accent.

"The only reasons we killed this man this is because Muslims are dying daily," he added, in video aired by CNN affiliate ITN. "This British soldier is an eye for an eye a tooth for tooth."

One witness, Michael Atlee, described the gruesome, frenzied and ultimately fatal sequence of events Wednesday afternoon as "a bloody mess."

British Prime David Cameron called it a terrorist attack.

"We will never buckle to terror," Cameron wrote on Twitter.

A witness, who identified himself only as James, told London's LBC 97.3 radio station that he saw two men standing by the victim, who was on the ground in the British capital's Woolwich neighborhood.

At first James thought they were trying to help the man. But then he saw two meat cleavers, like a butcher would have.

"They were hacking at this poor guy, literally," he told the radio station, as if they were trying to remove his organs.

"These two guys were crazed. They were just not there. They were just animals."

Afterward, the men appeared to want to be filmed, with one of the attackers going over to a bus and asking people to take photos of him as if he wanted to be on TV.

In video obtained by British tabloid newspaper The Sun, a cleaver-wielding man apologized to women who had witnessed the attack, then quickly added "but in our lands our women have to see the same."

"You people will never be safe," he said. "Remove your government. They don't care about you. You think David Cameron is going to get caught in the street when we start busting our guns?

"... Get rid of them. Tell them to bring our troops back so we can all live in peace."

Police responded to the assault soon after it was reported at 2:20 p.m. (9:20 a.m. ET). They included armed members of a firearms unit, even though British police typically don't carry guns, because "early reports" indicated the attackers had "weapons," Metropolitan Police Commander Simon Letchworth said.

The suspects rushed at the arriving officers before being shot, James told the radio station.

"They have both been taken to separate London hospitals and are receiving treatment for their injuries," Letchworth said.

Cameron -- who was in France at the time of the incident but headed back home promptly -- declined to confirm if the man killed was a serving soldier, while Britain's Defense Ministry said it was investigating to see whether that's the case.

Yet Nick Raynsford, a member of Parliament, told CNN that the victim is believed to be a serving soldier who was based at a nearby barracks.

The BBC updates are saying one of the attackers was from Nigeria and linked to jihadists. Also that men in full army uniform were seen entering the police station, and confirmed they were there in connection to the murder.

And apparently the EDL are at the scene protesting, and calling for more protests over the murder.

It's just crazy - doesn't seem real. One of the Islamist terrorists stated aims was to behead a soldier, and the fact these guys stayed around waiting for the police and asking the public to film them and their rants, makes me think they wanted the notoriety of being the first to achieve it.

Two men have been convicted of murdering a soldier in broad daylight near a military barracks in London, in the first al-Qaida-inspired attack to claim a life on British soil since 7 July 2005.

Michael Adebolajo, 29, and Michael Adebowale, 22, murdered Lee Rigby, 25, as he returned to the Woolwich barracks in south London, in May.

They were convicted after a trial at the Old Bailey in central London, which heard that the soldier was almost beheaded in the attack.

The jury took just over 90 minutes to reach its verdicts. Both men were found not guilty of the attempted murder of a police officer. Relatives of Rigby cried as the verdicts were given.

Adebolajo showed no remorse for his actions when he gave evidence in his trial, telling jurors that he was a "soldier of Allah" and that he had no choice but to obey the command of Allah.

Speaking in a low voice only feet from Rigby's family, Adebolajo described how he held the soldier's hair as he hacked at his neck in a motion described by one witness as like a "butcher attacking a joint of meat".

Another horrified bystander said he "instantly believed that he was trying to cut the victim's head off" when he saw the man using a meat cleaver to mutilate Rigby's motionless body. A third witness said Adebolajo had a look of pure evil after attacking Rigby's head while his accomplice rammed knives into his chest like he was "trying to remove his organs from his torso".

"He had done absolutely nothing to deserve what you did to him", the judge said. The pair created "a bloodbath", he went on, adding: "You both gloried in what you had done.

"Your sickening and pitiful conduct was in stark contrast to the women at the scene who tended to Lee Rigby's body and challenged what you had done."

The 72, as I understand it, the Koran speaks about is the number of WIVES.... not virgins. Talk about jumping out of the frying pan, and into the fire!

The Koran itself doesn't specify a number. The 72 figure is from the Hadith ("Tradition"), collected sayings attributed to Mohamed, one of which is "the smallest reward for the people of paradise is an abode where there are 80,000 servants and 72 wives". Presumably some might be awarded more, but 72 wives is the minimum, apparently.

Regarding what the Koran itself says about the virgins, there is some scholarly question about whether the word traditionally rendered "virgins" in the Koran should instead be translated as "chilled raisins". Some suicide bombers might be in for a shock...

Is it wrong that I find a visual of this really, really funny? Some asshole blows himself up for Allah, expecting hot virgins, and ends up with raisins. Hell... I was greatly disappointed when I got raisins instead of chocolate while trick-or-treating.
