CORPUS CHRISTI — A 20-year-old man stabbed three times in the chest and jolted by an attacker’s stun gun remained in critical condition at a local hospital on Wednesday, authorities said.

An assault of the 20-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman who came to his aid began about 9 p.m. Tuesday at Antelope and Lily streets as an argument between two couples about hair straightener, police said. It escalated to one couple accusing the other of child neglect and for contacting authorities, Lt. Isaac Valencia said.

“They knew each other from the neighborhood,â€￾ Valencia said.

Alfred Aviles, 27, and Liliana Madden, 20, were taken into custody while attempting to hide in a nearby apartment complex in the 3300 block of Up River Road, according to a police brief. They are charged with felony aggravated assault with bonds set at $15,000 each, Nueces County jail officials said. Madden also is being held on a noncompliance warrant for not serving court-ordered community service for theft, officials said.

The man and his wife were walking from a store about 9 p.m. when he was stabbed with a pocketknife three times in the chest and once in the arm by Aviles, according to the brief. He also was assaulted with a stun gun by Madden.

“We were advised he was extremely critical and doctors did not believe he would survive,â€￾ Valencia said.

The man’s wife was not injured in the incident, Capt. Todd Green said.

During the assault a 21-year-old woman, who Green said the couple knew, tried to intervene. She was stabbed in the back three times and was assaulted with the stun gun. She was listed in stable condition Wednesday morning at Christus Spohn Hospital Memorial.

Police recovered the pocketknife, but not the stun gun, Green said.
