A former Plymouth Argyle youth player has died in south Devon after an argument broke out at a taxi rank.

Alex Peguero-Sosa, 17, was injured in Kingsbridge at about 02:20 BST and was later declared dead at Derriford Hospital, in Plymouth.

A man in his 40s was arrested in Kingsbridge on Sunday on suspicion of murdering the teenager. He is in custody at Torquay police station.

The town's mayor, Wayne Grills, said Kingsbridge was a very small community and the teenager was well known and liked.

He said: "The town is in a state of shock. Waking up to the news on social media, it is very unusual. It has been decades since the last event of this kind. It is a close knit community and this is very unusual."

What a tough guy. Wonder what they were fighting over?

No news on that yet. However:

Alex Peguero-Sosa, 17, from Aveton Gifford, Devon, was injured at about 02:20 BST on Sunday in Kingsbridge and died later.

Officers said the neck wound "may have been caused by glass, possibly a bottle".

The Kingsbridge Community College sixth form student was also left with serious head injuries as a result of the incident.

A man has been jailed for murdering a teenage footballer by stabbing him in the neck with a broken bottle.

Tyre salesman Dent was sentenced to life in prison, with a minimum term of 22-years, at Plymouth Crown Court.

During the two-week trial, the jury heard how Dent and a group of friends had been drinking in Kingsbridge and Mr Peguero Sosa had also been out socialising.

The court heard the pair had been squaring up to each other at a taxi rank when Dent picked up a bottle and smashed it into Mr Peguero Sosa's neck.

Prosecutor Simon Laws said: "It was an act of pure aggression from the defendant.

"It was a situation he could have walked away from at any point. Instead, he chose to resort to violence of an extreme kind and a young life was wasted as a result."

The court was told how Dent dumped his blood-soaked clothes in a rubbish bag in a recycling bin, which police found the next day.

Dent told the court he was "not racist" and had Asian, black and Muslim friends.

He said it was possible in the heat of the moment he may have said Mr Peguero Sosa "deserved it", using racially abusive language as he walked away from the scene.

I think that's an appropriate sentence. Especially considering his demeanor afterward with the racial rant. Good on the court!

A 3D-printed bottle was used in the trial of a man who went on to be convicted of murdering a teenager.

City College Plymouth said it was asked to make a replica of the weapon to show how it was handled.

Det Insp Ian Ringrose, of Devon and Cornwall Police, said: "Thanks to the replica of the murder weapon they produced, the prosecution was able to safely ask the defendant to demonstrate how he had held the bottle when he struck the victim.

"It allowed the barrister, Simon Laws QC, to closely cross examine him on this aspect of his evidence.
