A student was hacked to death by her brother after returning home to support her mother after he had tried to kill himself, an inquest has heard.
Kathryn Jenkin, 20, and Alice McMeekin, 58, were killed with an axe during a schizophrenic episode at the family home in Millom, Cumbria, in June 2013.
John Jenkin was jailed for life in March 2014 for their manslaughter.
The women's inquest at Barrow Town Hall heard the pair were killed less than 48 hours after he was released from a mental health unit.
Post-mortem examinations showed they both died of head injuries - thought to be from an axe, which was found bloodstained in an upstairs bedroom.
Jenkin, who also killed the family dog, was later discovered crouching naked on a nearby beach.
When a police officer asked him if he had taken anything, Jenkin replied: "Lives."
Cumbria Coroner David Roberts said Jenkin was aware of the inquests but had indicated he did not wish to attend or take an active role in the proceedings.
