Isaiah Moutria, 20, was charged Friday with neglect of a dependent causing death, a Level 1 Felony that could result in 20 to 40 years in prison.
On June 24, 8-month-old Keegan Wolf was treated for a traumatic brain injury and airlifted to Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis, according to the probable cause affidavit. The child later died, and a forensic pathologist determined the cause of death to be from blunt force trauma to the head and ruled the case a homicide.
Moutria was dating and living with Wolf's mother at the time the infant was injured, according to court documents. Moutria first told investigators he didn't know Wolf had been injured because he was in the shower, saying it must have been the child's mother that injured him.
But when interviewed on two separate days this week, Moutria changed his story. While the child's mother was not home, Moutria first said he fell on Wolf while holding him inside the nursery. Then Moutria said he had actually fallen and dropped Wolf off the stairs and he fell to the floor a story below, landing on his head.
When telling both versions of his story, Moutria said Wolf cried for a short while after the fall, then quieted down and continued to look around so Moutria put him to bed.
After the interview was over, Moutria asked to speak with police one more time, again with a different story. This time Moutria said he dropped Wolf into his "pack and play" too roughly. The pad in the "pack and play" had been removed and Moutria said the child hit his head on a hard plastic center hub.
Moutria did not seek medical attention and when Wolf's mother returned home she found the baby unresponsive. Moutria did not inform anyone of what he had done.
A consulting neurologist indicated the injuries to the 8-month-old were so severe that the baby was rendered unconscious and unresponsive immediately upon the injury.
Wolf also sustained several other injuries in his short life around Moutria, including a broken arm, a pen injury to the eye and air within the chest cavity around the lungs, according to court documents.
