police are working to piece together what led up to a 4-year-old boy getting his hands on his mother's gun and accidentally shooting himself in the thigh.

Jaylen Lum shot himself Monday night inside a home in the 6200 block of Minock Street. He's in stable condition at Children's Hospital

Police said Jaylen's 30-year-old mother told them she had gone to the gun range earlier in the day and fell asleep with the gun in a holster on her hip.

police also said the boy told them he found the gun on a table. The mother was taken into custody on a child neglect charge.
Jaylen's uncle, Joshua Wilson, said his sister would never put her son in harm's way.

Doesn't really matter where the gun was, it certainly was where he could get to it. I'm all for personal protection as long as you use some personal responsibility. And really who could just fall asleep with a big old gun strapped to them? The first thing I would do when I hit the door would be to put the gun up where little hands couldn't get it.

1. Teach your children that guns are NOT toys.

2. If you cannot do that, then before you decide to go to bed lock them up! Guns not the kids, have to clarify that here given the content of some of the articles on here.
