A woman called her boyfriend to bring a gun to her daughter’s birthday party at Chuck E. Cheese’s after getting in a custody dispute with the father of the child, police say.
A witness told police that the woman, Aesian Anunique Clay, 20, said to her 1-year-old daughter: “Say your last goodbye to your daddy because he is going to die today.”
The birthday girl’s father was not injured in the attack, but her grandfather was, police said. He was shot several times in the lower body with a handgun allegedly fired by the boyfriend, police said.
On Wednesday, prosecutors charged Clay with attempted first-degree assault. Several other people are being sought in the attack.
Clay and the baby’s father, who has not been identified, were at the family-friendly pizzeria at 2669 Veterans Memorial Parkway Monday night for the party, authorities said. Clay was angry with him because he had failed to take the girl on a scheduled visitation day.
During the argument, Clay told him that she was going to call her new boyfriend and “you better be strapped,” implying that he should arm himself in advance of her boyfriend’s arrival, according to court documents.
Another witness then overheard Clay talking on the phone, presumably with her boyfriend, telling him to bring his guns, police said.
Clay’s boyfriend arrived at the restaurant a short time later with another man and woman. During a scuffle, he shot the baby's grandfather, police said. No one else was injured.
Clay admitted to police that she had called her boyfriend but refused to identify him. After getting a search warrant for her phone, police found several photographs of Clay with him.
