First, Paola Vargas-Ortiz told police she tossed her 4-month old son off the northern end of the Seven Mile Bridge. A brief search by the U.S. Coast Guard and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission was called off when the she changed her story.

Then, the distraught woman threatening to take the long leap into the chilly water Sunday afternoon, said her infant was at home safe and with family. But when Monroe County sheriff’s deputies searched the woman’s car and spotted a baby seat and toys — and no infant — they grew more concerned.

Finally, as Vargas-Ortiz was being escorted from the bridge she made this admission: Her child was at home, in a freezer, dead. She also told police, who rushed her to Fishermen’s Community Hospital in Marathon, that she had ingested rat poison.

Keys cops called Homestead police, who raced to the home at 2482 NE Third Ct. and confirmed the woman’s account. Now Vargas-Ortiz’s mental condition is being evaluated at Jackson Memorial Hospital. And the cause of her son’s death is being investigated by the Miami-Dade County medical examiner.

No charges have been filed.

“There wasn’t any struggle, nothing like that,” said Monroe County sheriff’s spokeswoman Becky Herrin, recalling Sunday’s tragic events and Vargas-Ortiz being taken into custody. “It’s very sad. Who knows what happened?” ....

As of Wednesday morning, few details had emerged about the sad episode and gruesome discovery. There was no access to Vargas-Ortiz’s home inside a gated subdivision in Homestead called the Isle of Oasis. It wasn’t clear who lived at the home or if anyone was there when police arrived. And until a cause of death is determined, law enforcement was holding off on pressing any charges.
"We found a deceased male approximately 4 months old inside a freezer,” said Miami-Dade Detective and spokeswoman Robin Pinkard. “We’re waiting for the autopsy to determine cause of death. We haven’t filed charges pending the medical examiner’s findings.”

woman who called police saying she was suicidal then led officers to a dead baby 100 miles away in Homestead, Florida, ...

The woman, who is not being identified, called authorities on Sunday afternoon to report that she was suicidal.

"We located her in Marathon, [Florida], at the north end of the Old Seven Mile Bridge," .... "She indicated to the officers that she had ingested rat poison."

While questioning her, officers noticed a baby seat in the woman's car and asked her about the whereabouts of the infant. "She gave a number of different stories, including that she'd thrown the baby over the bridge," says Herrin.

Eventually, however, the woman revealed that the infant was in a freezer in Homestead, some 100 miles north of her location. Officers contacted Miami-Dade Police and asked them to check out the residence. There, they found a child dead in the freezer.

Following the discovery, the woman was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and was later moved to a Miami hospital, according to Herrin.

The cause and manner of the infant's death have not been released, but as of yet no charges have been filed and the case remains under investigation.

HOMESTEAD, Fla. — Authorities say they found a baby boy dead in a freezer at a South Florida home following his mother’s suicide threats.

The Miami Herald reports that 37-year-old Paola Vargas-Ortiz remained under mental evaluation at a Miami hospital Wednesday.

Authorities say Vargas-Ortiz was poised to jump from the Seven Mile Bridge in the Keys Sunday afternoon when she told them that she had tossed her 4-month-old son in first.

Paola Vargas-Ortiz told Monroe Sheriff’s Deputy Rosa DiGiovanni, “I was bathing it and it slipped out of my hands,” the report says.

When DiGiovanni asked her what “it” was, the woman replied: “My baby was a boy.”

Wildlife officials and the U.S. Coast Guard conducted a brief search before she changed her story.

After Monroe County deputies took Vargas-Ortiz into custody, officials say she told them the child was actually dead in a freezer. Homestead police went to the woman’s home and confirmed that the child’s body was there.

Medical examiners will determine a cause of death. No charges have been filed.

** Let me know if that's not her but I am almost positive **

I give my baby a bath all the time one time she did in fact slip out when I was holding her arm reaching for the shampoo she made a sudden move to grab her toy and fell backwards but I got to tell you all I moved so fast she didn't make it under the water. That freaked me out so much. I had a baby bath but when I put her in it there was a hard part inside it it would hurt her back so now I just give her baths by holding her the whole time. I'm not understanding how a 4 month baby drowns in the bathtub .. unless she intentionally did it. Or left the baby unattended

MIAMI - The mother of a 5-month-old boy who was found in a freezer in Homestead is facing a manslaughter charge.

Paola Vargas-Ortiz was arrested Thursday and booked into the Turner Guilford-Knight Correctional Center. A judge later ruled that she could be released on house arrest.

Police were called to a home at 2482 NE Third Court last month after she told Monroe County sheriff's deputies that her baby boy had drowned and was in the freezer at his father's home in Homestead.

When officers arrived, they found the baby, identified as Hugo Alvarez-Vargas, dead in the freezer. The boy was wrapped in a blanket and fully clothed.

Deputies said Vargas-Ortiz was threatening to kill herself by jumping off the Seven Mile Bridge in the Florida Keys.

According to an arrest warrant, Vargas-Ortiz told deputies that she was depressed and had ingested rat poison. The report said Vargas-Ortiz told a deputy that she was bathing her baby when he slipped out of her hands.

An autopsy determined that the baby died from a lack of oxygen, and a piece of cotton was lodged in his nostril.

As a condition for her release, Vargas-Ortiz is required to remain under continuous supervision by her family. She is also required to continue counseling.

Assistant state attorney Scott Warfman called her a "walking time bomb" who tried to kill herself, but her attorney said she was discharged from a mental hospital because she didn't meet the criteria.

Vargas-Ortiz's husband attended Thursday's hearing but had nothing to say to reporters as he left the courtroom.

Meanwhile, the Florida Department of Children and Families has an open investigation.

Mom was arrested and charged with manslaughter/aggravated/child. The mother was subsequently sentenced
to 10 years' probation for thew charge.

The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner completed an autopsy. The cause of death is listed as probably asphyxia unknown determined means, with the manner of death listed as could not be determined.

The Department concluded its investigation with verified findings of death and inadequate supervision.

How truly sad and heartbreaking that this woman was never held accountable for what she did to this poor child.

I know we have debated over the years about PPD and if women who commit horrific crimes should be held accountable for them.

The question will probably never be answered but it does reinforce the need for those around anyone struggling emotionally/mentally to be present in the moment and offer kindness and assistance.

I will always wonder if Hugo Alvarez-Vargas experienced a moment of love in his all too short time here.
