A convicted criminal once nicknamed "Mr Big" was shot and killed in an "assassination", his brother has said.

Paul Massey, 55, was found dead outside his Salford home on Sunday evening.

The security boss, who was jailed in 1999 for 14 years over a stabbing, died from a gunshot wound to the chest after being shot four times, police said.

"It wasn't murder, it was an assassination - it was planned. There was no robbery, nothing like that - as far as I'm concerned, it was planned," [his brother] said.

Several eyewitnesses saw the gunman approach Massey, who unsuccessfully stood to be Salford mayor in 2012, at about 19:30 BST as he got out of his silver BMW.

After opening fire, the shooter left on foot down the side of nearby St Anne's Church, police said.

Officers appealed for a teenager who was standing at a nearby bus stop to contact them.

Detectives also want to speak to the owner of a silver or grey Volvo that turned left out of Church Walk shortly after the incident.

Massey called emergency services from his driveway in Manchester Road, Clifton, telling them he had been shot.

The gunman was white, slim and wore a hat, which was possibly fisherman style, police said.

Google is of the opinion that the Bob Denver, the actor who played Gilligan, passed away in 2005, so that would be a negative......

What do you mean: "That was intended as a joke"? o_O :angelic:

Ahh, so he was shot by Gilligan's ghost. Makes for a much better story anyway. :angelic::whistle:

Everyone has neighbors...some of them are nice and normal and will stop by your garage sale and then there are the other kind...that shouldn't leave their house without a bulletproof vest. :spy:

Police are exploring a possible link to the death of Paul Massey, found dead outside his home on 26 July.

No arrests have been made.
