A pet dog who helped to save a family of four by alerting them to an overnight house fire deserves an award, the dog-owner's niece has said.

Firefighters rescued the family who were trapped by flames at their home in Dundonald, on the outskirts of Belfast.

Sophie Campbell said her aunt, uncle and two young cousins were asleep upstairs in the house when the fire broke out in their downstairs kitchen.

She said they were alerted by "unusual" barking from their dog Bella.

"Bella doesn't really bark, Bella is a good wee dog," Ms Campbell told the BBC.

"Obviously something serious was going on, because Bella is not a barky dog."

She said the family went downstairs to find out why the dog was making noise and that was when they noticed the flames.

"They were able to run in and get Bella from the cage and brought her up the stairs [and] rang the fire brigade," Ms Campbell added.

The family then realised they were trapped - they could not escape through the back door because of the fire and they could not use their front door, as the key was in the burning kitchen.

The parents gathered their children in an upstairs room, opened a window and waited to be rescued.

They ran back upstairs? They have to open a door with a key from the inside? I'm surprised they've survived this long. Love the term wee dog.

The front door of my flat, the one that leads onto the landing, is one that needs a key. I leave the key in the door when I am home for the same reason, but then I live alone, so it doesn't inconvenience anyone else.

Must be European style architecture. I've never lived in any type of home here in the U.S. Where a key was necessary to get out. I have a neighbor that locks her screen door instead of the front door behind it but even that does not require a key to get out. Must not be allowed in U.S. for safety access.

On the positive side, it makes it hard to accidentally lock oneself out of the house....

Good boy! Give that doggie a new pet bed, a rhinestone collar and a lifetime supply of bbq ribs! Give the family a course on how to escape a fire.*hint* run OUT the door, jump OUT the window...do not run UP the stairs.

Cats would just go look for marshmallows.
