Chris Trokey and Dr Michael Shannon
A doctor who saved the life of a premature baby saw him return the favour 26 years later in an incredible twist of fate. Chris Trokey was born several weeks early in 1985, weighing just 1.45 kg, and was given a 50/50 chance of surviving. But Dr Michael Shannon, a paediatrician, worked round the clock to ensure the newborn pulled through.

Decades later on March 29, 2011, Dr Shannon who was driving through Orange County, California, was involved in a horrific crash. It left him pinned to the floor as his car caught fire and flames began burning his legs.

Chris, was among the first rescuers on the scene. The 26-year-old grew up to become a firefighter and helped extinguish the flames before cutting a hole in the wreckage and pulling Dr Shannon out. Seriously injured, Dr Shannon spent 45 days in hospital and had two toes amputated. While he was recovering, Chris visited the hospital and discovered the unthinkable coincidence. The pair reunited this week to shave their heads to raise funds for cancer. Chris recently became a dad and his paediatrician is Dr Shannon.
