A 19-year-old mom tossed her 1-year-old son from an eastern Pennsylvania bridge and then jumped off herself on Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

Both the baby and his mom, neither of whom have been identified, are in serious condition following the 52-foot fall, but they're expected to survive,Allentown Police Capt. William Reinik told WFMZ-TV.

Investigators are examining the incident as an attempted murder-suicide, but they haven't filed any charges as of Sunday night, Reinik noted, according to WCAU-TV.

The woman pulled her baby out of his stroller and threw him over the railing at about 1:45 p.m., police told the local newspaper.

The mother then took her own leap but landed in shallow water and staggered to the shore, WCAU reported.

Police found the mom when they arrived on the scene moments later, but the baby had already floated 700 yards towards the town of Bethlehem, reports the local paper.

Officers plucked the child out of the water and performed CPR, according to The Morning Call.

The mom has been charged with attempted murder.

The Allentown woman who police said threw her baby from a bridge Sunday afternoon has been charged with attempted homicide.

Johnesha Monae Perry, 19, was arraigned at her bedside in Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest, Allentown Police Capt. Bill Reinik said Monday. Perry is being guarded by Lehigh County Sheriff's deputies. She is charged with one count of attempted murder, two counts of aggravated assault and one count of endangering the welfare of a child.

Police said the 1-year-old boy is in very critical condition at Cedar Crest as well.

"At this point, we don't know what to expect," Reinik said.

OMG - WTF - SMH

I'm just drawing a blank on anything reasonable to say about this one. Ugh. Bless this little boy, and I hope he pulls through.

Damn that's harsh. I am wondering if she was trying to say a final FU to the baby's father or the her parents maybe she was thinking his life would not be good without her. There is no logic reason for her to have tried to kill him. I can see not that it is logical but suicide but not taking him out before taking herself out.

Sad sending healing vibes his way.

Wow....she looks so happy and sane in that picture. Well minus the drawn on eyebrows and what looks like could be a black eye. . . she seems normal.

I get that... But post natal depression or psychosis is a real bitch.
If that was the cause. We don't know that yet, she could very well have been pissed at the baby daddy and did this out of revenge.

If her motive was mental illness (PPP) then she needs help, lots of help, but if it was anything else then she needs a prison cell.

I hope he survives without significant permanent brain/lung damage. It sounds like he's barely hanging on. I have to wonder if this could really be related to PPD/PPP...over a year after the birth of this little guy.

woman gave her 1-year-old son a kiss before shoving him off a bridge into a river and jumping in after him, authorities said Monday as they announced she was being charged with homicide.

Johnesha Monae Perry, 19, is charged with killing Zymeir Perry, of Allentown, who died Saturday, Lehigh County District Attorney Jim Martin said.

Police said Perry told them she intended to kill her son when she threw him off the Hamilton Street Bridge in Allentown.

The child fell more than 50 feet into the Lehigh River. Police pulled him out about 700 yards downstream, but he had no pulse. The child "appeared to be engorged with water and had a swollen face," according to court documents.

Emergency personnel eventually revived him, but he was declared brain dead six days later and removed from life support.

An autopsy performed Monday found he died from complications of blunt force trauma and drowning.

Perry jumped in after pushing him over the railing, according to court documents. She was found along the riverbank and taken to a hospital, then to jail, where she is being held without bail.

Zymeir's organs have been donated, according to Martin.

The impact of his body hitting water could have enough force to cause thei juries. Especially if he was parallel to the water upon entry .

I agree that's definitely possible. It's like hitting concrete. I made the mistake of horsing around on the high dive with a friend one time (against the rules) and couldn't get into a dive/vertical position quick enough to cut through the water. I literally knocked myself silly on top of having a huge, red, impact area on my face and torso plus nausea and one hell of a headache from an unintentional "belly buster." I had to sit out for about 45 min. before I could even get back in the water. :wacky: :hurting:

Good question, though. I'd like to know the source of the trauma, too.

I see a dam in that picture, perhaps there is more downstream from that bridge. Maybe he got slammed up against some grating as part of that system?
Just a thought.

A mother admitted in court that she threw her baby off an Allentown bridge and into the Lehigh River in a horrifying incident that ultimately led to the baby's death.

Johnesha Monae Perry, an Allentown resident who was 19 at the time of the May 2015 incident at the Hamilton Street bridge, pleaded guilty Friday in Lehigh County Court to third-degree murder, the Lehigh County District Attorney's Office confirmed.

A judge sentenced Perry, now 21, to 20 to 40 years in state prison immediately the plea was entered.

Perry, had been charged with homicide and child endangerment for the death of her 20-month-old son, Zymeir Perry.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Matthew Falk said in a statement that Perry "has real mental health issues, and while they certainly do not absolve her of the responsibility of this monstrous act, we believe that they, along with her low IQ, require us, in fairness, to offer this plea."

Perry's biological mother drank heavily while pregnant with her, defense mitigation specialist Louise Luck testified, according to the news release. Luck described Perry's childhood as including ongoing sexual abuse both by her biological brother and a series of men her biological mother allowed to molest her, the news release states.

Police say Perry had been pushing the baby in a stroller across the bridge. When she got to the middle of the bridge, she allegedly put the boy on the railing, gave him a kiss and pushed him over the edge before jumping in herself.

Both were initially rescued after a 52-foot fall into the Lehigh River. Perry survived. The boy died six days later from complications from blunt-force trauma and drowning.

Lehigh County Judge Kelly Banach praised the prosecution for showing courage and "good sense" by offering a plea in the case rather than taking it to trial, according to a news release from the prosecutor's office.
