Mikhail Brian Young, 24, is charged with killing his mother Jane Young, 66, and his father Kenneth Young, 73, in a rented condominium complex in the Crystal Cove Beach Resort at Sapphire Bay on St. Thomas.

On Monday evening at about 8, the U.S. Virgin Islands Police Department contacted Sudbury Police about the homicide. Sudbury police located Young, whom they said was "known to police," and arrested him at his family’s home at 235 Goodmans Hill Road on a warrant for a probation violation.

On Tuesday, Sudbury Police also charged Young as a fugitive from justice. At Young’s Framingham District Court arraignment Tuesday, prosecutor Emily Jackson asked Judge David Cunis to hold Young without bail.

“If he should waive extradition, we will make arrangements with the proper authorities,” Jackson said.

The probation department also asked that Young be detained without bail. He is on probation for indecent exposure.

U.S. Virgin Islands authorities have charged Young with two counts each of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, first-degree assault, unlawful possession of a dangerous weapon during the commission of first-degree murder, unlawful possession of a dangerous weapon during the commission of second-degree murder and unlawful possession of a dangerous weapon during the commission of first-degree assault.

Young’s lawyer, Robert Costello, argued that Sudbury Police had no legal right to arrest Young on Monday. Costello said Young was in good standing with his probation, and he had not yet been charged in the U.S. Virgin Islands, so police could not arrest him on a non-existent probation violation.

“I’m saying he shouldn’t be held, he should not be detained,” Costello said.

Cunis ordered Young held without bail. Costello asked that Young undergo a court-ordered evaluation for both mental competency and criminal responsibility. He said Young has a history of mental illness. In restraining order affidavits filled out by Kenneth and Jane Young in 2011, both said their adopted son had bipolar disorder and refused to take medication. They had a previous restraining order against him, the affidavit said.

A 24-year-old man with a history of mental illness and criminal behavior appeared in court today for the first time since police say he stabbed his elderly parents to death while on vacation in the US Virgin Islands and then fled to Massachusetts.

Mikhail Young, of Sudbury, was charged in Framingham District Court Tuesday with being a fugitive from justice after he allegedly killed his parents, Jane and Kenneth Young, who were discovered dead in their rented condominium on the island of St Thomas Monday.

Young was ordered held without bail. His next court appearance is scheduled for May 12, and he is expected to be extradited to the Virgin Islands to face first-degree murder charges after undergoing a mental health evaluation.

The murder suspect was arrested by Sudbury police as a warrant was issued by island authorities after he fled the tropical paradise.

The Young family, including Mikhail, had been staying at a Crystal Cove condominium on the island's east end before the son hastily came down to the lodging's front office and demanded a taxi Saturday.

Police were called after the bodies of 73-year-old Kenneth Young and his 66-year-old wife, Jane, were found around 3pm Monday, but were unable to talk to Mikhail, who did not check out of the condo, as he flew to Philadelphia and then to Boston.

A condominium resident found Kenneth Young's body lying on the ground covered in blood. His wife was discovered in the bathtub and both bodies have multiple stab wounds, including to the chest, Virgin Islands Police Commissioner designee Delroy Richards Sr said in a phone press conference with Daily Mail Online.

The Youngs, who traveled to the island April 28, are believed to have all lived together in Sudbury, Massachusetts, a suburb west of Boston.

While police did not speculate on a motive, Virgin Islands Commissioner for the Department of Tourism said that the cause was a 'family dispute' and that 'there is nothing in this particular case that could have been mitigated'.

Richards said earlier Tuesday that a bloodied knife was found at the scene and that the search for suspects had extended 'off-island'.

Jane Young retired in January after 17 years of teaching at Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School, according to the Boston Globe.

Lincoln-Sudbury Superintendent Bella Wong confirmed the deaths of Jane and her husband in a message to the school.

Sudbury Police Chief Scott Nix said that 'a horrific crime where the suspect allegedly killed his own parents'.

Virgin Islands authorities are filing murder charges against Mikhail and are asking for him to be extradited back to St Thomas.

Young has a long rap sheet documenting his arrests and convictions, including an incident in which he allegedly attacked one of his parents.

Mikhail Young, who also reportedly has a history of mental illness, was arrested in his hometown of Sudbury in 2008 for possession of marijuana, reported MetroWest Daily News. Two years later, he landed behind bars on assault and battery charges stemming from a domestic dispute involving his parents.

Then in 2011, Young was arrested again, this time for assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct

They must have been the most forgiving parents on the planet to take their violent-with-restraining-orders-against-him adult son on vacation with them to St. Thomas. Unless they planned on killing and dumping his no-good ass in a Natalee Holloway fashion and he got the drop on them. I wonder...I really wonder... o_O

OK- this is random but I wonder if he (the son) is one of those Russian orphanage kids that end up so troubled?

That was my first thought, too! The current Russian-imposed ban against Americans adopting their orphans might be a blessing in disguise. (Many wonderful children come from Russia, but there are seriously troubled children getting through the system into unsuspecting homes, too.)

A Sudbury man, who stabbed his parents to death in the U.S. Virgins Island while on vacation more than two years ago, will spend the next five decades in Massachusetts psychological facilities.

Mikhail Young, 26, pleaded guilty to manslaughter at a June 22 hearing, according to the U.S. Virgin Islands’ Department of Justice.

“Mr. Young was diagnosed with having mental illness since the age of 5,” said Corliss Smithen, a spokeswoman for the Virgin Islands Department of justice. “He has been evaluated and it was determined that the killing of his adopted parents was the result of his ongoing mental illness.”

Young’s Massachusetts attorney, Stanley Norkunas, fought having Young sent to the U.S. Virgin Islands due to Young’s mental disabilities. However, a court ruled against him.

In early June, the Department of Justice attempted to bring Young to the Virgin Islands to be arraigned and for a change of plea and sentencing hearings. However, Young’s aberrant behavior prevented him being flown to the islands.

“The Department of Justice attempted to bring Mr. Young back to the territory to face charges, but at the time, Mr. Young began to eat away at the flesh of both of his wrists,” said Smithen. “Therefore, the airlines did not allow him to travel and other agencies that we partnered with in the past refused to provide assistance based on Mr. Young’s condition.”

After the incident, Young was civilly committed to Bridgewater State Hospital. While there, doctors evaluated him and it was determined that he could participate in a hearing if on the proper medication, but a trial would be too stressful, Smithen said.

On June 22, during a video conference from Massachusetts to the U.S. Virgin Islands, Young pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and using a dangerous weapon during a crime of violence.

Young was sentenced to a 50-year sentence to be served at Bridgewater State Hospital or any other mental facility the Department of Correction chooses.
