Private School Headmaster, Dr. Chris Wheeler, On The Run From Child Porn Charges

Police are searching for the former Tower Hill School headmaster, who stepped down last week amid a criminal investigation and today was charged with multiple counts of child pornography, the state Attorney General’s Office said.
Christopher D. Wheeler, 53, was charged with 25 counts of dealing in child pornography, which authorities discovered during an Oct. 22 search of his office and campus home, in the 1500 block of Mount Salem Lane in Wilmington.
At the time, school officials said there was no reason to believe the investigation involved current Tower Hill students. Today, however, the Attorney General’s Office declined to say whether any students of the exclusive private school were involved.

After a search warrant was served on Wheeler's home on October 22nd, the school's Board of Trustees confirmed the allegations and that the headmaster had stepped down.

Wheeler, who is unmarried, adopted a young boy from Russia in the early 2000s after the boy, Nikolai Kovalevsky, was separated from his brother and sister at the age of 9.
Nikolai Kovalevsky Wheeler, now 23, came to Delaware with his father, attending Sanford School in Hockessin and Layton Preparatory School in Centreville before enrolling at Wilmington University.

Christopher D. Wheeler, who rejected an offer to serve only a minimum of four years in prison for dealing in child pornography, was instead sentenced to a mandatory 50 years behind bars Friday.

Wheeler's sentencing and guilty verdict, which his lawyer plans to appeal, culminated an 18-month investigation that shook the elite private school in west Wilmington.

In a case that stemmed from unsubstantiated allegations that Wheeler had sexually abused his adopted son and two other teenagers years ago, the 55-year-old Wheeler received a mandatory two years on each of 25 counts of dealing in child pornography.

The sentence was handed down Friday morning by Superior Court Judge Eric M. Davis, who had pronounced Wheeler guilty in December.

Prosecutor Abigail Layton revealed the plea bargain offer that Wheeler turned down after the verdict. She said Wheeler would have faced the statutory two to 25 years in prison on each of the two counts, with only a minimum of four years behind bars. Prosecutors would have sought no more than 15 years, Layton said.

Wheeler instead opted for a non-jury trial,which Davis held in September. It lasted only one day, with only the lead state police detective testifying, and ended with separate closing arguments in November.
