A Syrian man living in the UK, believed to be a prominent activist against President Assad, has been found shot dead in his car in north-west London.

Police were called by paramedics after a man, in his 40s, was found with what were thought to be bullet wounds to the chest, at The Paddocks, in Wembley.

The BBC understands the victim was Abdul Hadi Arwani, a chef and former imam at a London mosque, reported in the past as having extremist links.

Counter terrorism police are investigating the murder of a Syrian man found with gunshot wounds in a car in north-west London.

The Met said its officers remain "open-minded" about a motive for the former imam's death.

Counter terrorism detectives are now conducting inquiries because of their expertise in investigations with international dimensions, Scotland Yard said.

Mr Arwani was a preacher at the An Noor mosque in Acton, west London, from 2005 to 2011.

Wow, this story reads like a movie plot. Was he an extremist that changed his mind or an extremist with a good cover story.

Whatever he was, someone did not like him. It was an hit. I highly doubt the police will solve this one.

If he was a threat before, he's no longer a concern of being a threat now. Maybe these suspects did that part of the world a favor.
