Police are continuing to search the park where a missing student's handbag was found.

Karen Buckley, 24, from Cork in Ireland, left a Glasgow nightclub in the early hours of Sunday morning and went with a man to a flat, where she spent several hours.

She has not been seen since, but her handbag was discovered in the city's Dawsholm Park on Tuesday afternoon.

Officers have said they are "gravely concerned" for her wellbeing.

Miss Buckley, whose disappearance is said to be completely out of character, was last seen on CCTV talking to a man outside the Sanctuary nightclub in Dumbarton Road.

The pair travelled in the man's car to his flat in Dorchester Avenue, in the Kelvinside area of the city. It is said that she left the flat at about 04:00 on Sunday and was planning to walk back to her flat in Hill Street, close to the city centre.

The two addresses are about four miles apart.

A handbag which officers believe belongs to Miss Buckley was found in Dawsholm Park, near Dorchester Avenue, on Tuesday afternoon.

The entrance to the park remained cordoned off on Wednesday morning as dozens of officers continued searching the area.

[Miss Buckley] arrived at the Sanctuary nightclub with friends at about 23:45 on Saturday and at about 01:00 she told them she was going to the toilet. She failed to return and did not take her jacket.

Her friends have said Miss Buckley had had a few drinks, but was not drunk.

Speaking on Tuesday, Det Supt Jim Kerr, from Police Scotland's major investigations team, said: "We've traced the man she was with in Dorchester Avenue. He believes he was intimate with her at his flat consensually in the early hours of Sunday."

The police officer added: "From what we can see, she does not appear to be under duress, there's no signs of a struggle or reluctance on her part to leave the club.

"However, that does not mean that something untoward has happened to her at a later stage."

Police are also keen to find out more about a grey car that was seen on the roads between Milngavie and Drymen north of Glasgow between 11:00 and 15:00 on Monday.

Det Supt Kerr said: "The activity of this grey car on the Monday is something that we're a wee bit concerned about. This car has been seen at various locations on these roads and I want to know why."

Update – Missing Woman – Karen Buckley, Glasgow

Speaking at a press conference today, Detective Superintendent Jim Kerr, the officer leading the enquiry in to the disappearance of Karen Buckley, a 24 year old occupational therapy student from Cork, Ireland, said:

Although this is very much a missing person enquiry – we are gravely concerned for Karen’s safety. She has now been missing for more than 48 hours and she has not been seen or heard from since she left the Sanctuary Club in Partick, around 0100 hours on Sunday morning, Sunday 12 April 2015.

“Yesterday we appealed for a man she was seen with on CCTV walking along Dumbarton Road after she left the club; we have traced him and he is assisting us with our enquiries. I must stress that at this time he is not a suspect; from what we can see she does not appear under duress - there is no sign of struggle or reluctance on her part to leave the club, however, again that does not mean that nothing untoward has happened to her.

“There was talk of another man she had been seen with – we have also spoken to him – so we are no longer trying to trace either of them. However, in saying that, we do need the public to come forward with any information they may have. To them it may seem insignificant, however, to us it may be the piece of information that leads to us finding her.

“The response from the public so far has been very encouraging – people really do want to help. Indeed we have had a number of offers to assist with the search for her. It is good to know there are people who are willing to help us, however, at this time what we need information about her whereabouts and her movements after leaving the club. We know she left the club with her handbag – which has been found - but left her coat behind and so far has not returned to pick it up. Why she left so suddenly without telling her friends we just don’t know – it was very much out of character – she is usually very good at keeping in touch with pals.

“As part of our extensive search for Karen, officers are still in the area she went missing - the west end - as well as other areas in the west and north of Glasgow. We know from our enquiry for example, that she was n the north west of the city – Kelvinside, Dorchester Avenue - in the early hours of Sunday morning. We have still to establish where she went from there.

Also from our enquiries, we are keen to trace a grey car – no model or make at this time – which was seen on the country roads between Milngavie and Drymen between 1100 and 1500 hours on Monday. Did you see the car maybe parked in lay-by or on the road? Did you notice anything suspicious activity surrounding it?

“As I said this is a missing person enquiry, however, we are gravely concerned that Karen has come to some harm - whether that is due to foul play/criminality or she has taken unwell or had an accident is obviously still to be established.

Karen is a lovely girl, close to her family and popular with her friends. She has only been in Glasgow a few months, and if staying out will always let her friends know – hence the real concern here. Like all youngsters, she is also very active on social media but there has been no activity on any of her accounts since Saturday night early Sunday morning.

“This is understandably a heartbreaking time for her family. Of course there is an intense interest both from the public and the media regarding her disappearance, however, speculation, particularly on social media, about the aspects of the case are not helping our enquiry and is extremely distressing for Karen’s family and friends.

Karen and her family are really close. Speaking today, her father John, who along with his wife Marian travelled from their home in Cork yesterday, said:

“Karen is a sensible girl. She always keeps in contact with her family and friends to let them know where she is and what she is up to. To not return to her flat or be in contact with her pals - not responding to texts and calls to her mobile is very, very worrying as it is so out of character.

“We are extremely concerned for her. We are desperate to get her back and safe with her family – she is only our only daughter; we love her dearly and just want her to come home safe and sound.”

An incident room has been set up at Govan Police Office – anyone with information is asked to call officers via the 101 number and ask for the incident room. Information can also be passed in confidence to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Please do not rely on social media to provide information – call us instead.

Extra patrols will be in the West End and Kelvinside area, so please approach them if you have any information or concerns.

They've added more detail:

Karen Buckley, 24, from Cork, was seen leaving the Sanctuary nightclub with a man in the early hours of Sunday.

BBC Scotland understands he is 21-year-old Alexander Pacteau, who has already been interviewed by police but is not being treated as a suspect.

Miss Buckley's bag was found in Dawsholm Park on Tuesday.

Mr Pacteau said she had left the property at 04:00 on Sunday to make her way home.

No, this doesn't sound good at all. I'm hoping this is just the way the journalist wrote this up, but for some weird reason, this sticks out in my mind: "He believes he was intimate with her at his flat consensually in the early hours of Sunday." o_O I guess now we're just waiting for the body ID info. :(

Hundreds of people have attended a candelit vigil in Glasgow for murdered student Karen Buckley.

The 24-year-old's parents and two of her three brothers were among those who brought candles and flowers.

Miss Buckley's body was found on a farm to the north of Glasgow, four days after she went missing following a night out in the city's west end.

Alexander Pacteau, 21, has appeared in court charged with the Cork woman's murder and was remanded in custody.

Mr Pacteau, from Glasgow, made no plea or declaration during the private hearing at Glasgow Sheriff Court.

He is also accused of attempting to defeat the ends of justice. He will appear in court again next week for a full committal hearing.

Flowers and messages have also been left at the GCU campus and at the entrance to High Craigton Farm where Miss Buckley's body was found.

A separate event, entitled Silent Vigil For Our Neighbour Karen Buckley, has been organised to take place in the Garnethill area of the city, where Miss Buckley lived, on Saturday.

A special prayer service was held near her home in Mallow on Wednesday, and a fundraising page set up by Miss Buckley's former classmates to support her family has raised more than £50,000.

More than 150 people have gathered in Glasgow for a second vigil to remember murdered Irish student Karen Buckley.

The event in the Garnethill area, where Miss Buckley lived, follows a vigil on Friday attended by hundreds of people, including the young woman's family.

Miss Buckley was studying at Glasgow Caledonian University and shared a flat on Hill Street, which borders the park where the event is taking place.

Organisers said they wanted to give local people a chance to remember one of their neighbours "who didn't get to come home".

Candles were being lit in the shape of a triskele - a Celtic triple spiral - in recognition of Miss Buckley's Irish roots.

The family of murdered Irish student Karen Buckley have thanked people in Scotland for their "huge outpouring of support and sympathy".

"We would like to thank everybody in Scotland who helped us in any way.

Mr Buckley said: "People have been very good to us and it means a lot.

"The Scottish police were wonderful and very professional right through it all.

He said some police officers "took the trouble to travel to Ireland for Karen's funeral", and added: "It was a very kind and thoughtful thing to do."
