HUDSON - A 29-year-old homeless man is accused of beating up an elderly man who gave him a ride from a liquor store before stealing the older man's car.

According to the Pasco County Sheriff's Office, Donald Winston, 79, picked up hitchhiker James Alfred Jacobsen around 8:15 p.m. Wednesday at an ABC Liquor Store.

When Winston drove Jacobsen, 29, to Rhodes Road and U.S. 19, Jacobsen grabbed the older man's arm and punched him in the face and head more than a dozen times, breaking his nose and causing several cuts, the sheriff's office said.

Jacobsen demanded Winston's money, but the older man had only $2; Jacobsen then stole Winston's 2001 Ford Taurus and drove away, a sheriff's report said. Jacobsen was identified by an ex-girlfriend who viewed surveillance video from the liquor store that showed him getting into Winston's car, the sheriff's office said.

Jacobsen was charged with carjacking, robbery and aggravated battery on a person 65 years of age or older. He was being held at the Land O' Lakes Jail with bail set at $60,000. Winston's car has not been recovered.

Neighbors of a man found dead in his home on Jacksonville’s Northside have been charged with murder and accessory to murder in the case, police said Friday.

Bryan Joseph Edwards, 47, was killed during a robbery that was planned to take place during a drug deal, said Assistant Chief Chris Butler of the Sheriff’s Office.

James Alfred Jacobsen and Rebecca Irene Brantley, both 34, lived across the street from Edwards in the 1200 block of Carthage Drive, according to arrest reports.
Edwards was shot and killed inside his house after his neighbors arranged to buy marijuana from him as they had in the past, Butler said.

Edwards’ body was discovered March 1 when family members hadn’t heard from him for two days and he didn’t show up for work Feb. 28. Police found Edwards dead and three places inside where pot was growing.

The house was ransacked and a gold chain Edwards wore as well as a recently purchased camera were missing. The camera and chain were pawned at a Jacksonville business the next day. When detectives found the camera, they saw photos of Brantley and Jacobsen standing at the counter in the shop as well as photos of the interior of Edwards’ house.

The two were arrested for dealing in stolen property. Later, Jacobsen was charged with murder and Brantley was charged with accessory to murder.
