A suburban Denver man charged with pushing his wife to her death off a cliff in Colorado's Rocky Mountain National Park could not explain to investigators why he had a park map with an "X'' drawn at the spot where she fell.

Newly unsealed court documents say Harold Henthorn denied using the map during the deadly Sept. 29, 2012, hike. But he told friends that he scouted out the park's steep and craggy terrain at least six times, trying to find the perfect place to take Toni to celebrate their 12th year of marriage.

In more than 20 search warrants made public Wednesday, authorities say Henthorn studied his wife's financial status before marrying her, gave conflicting stories about what he was doing when she fell and may have tried to kill her previously.

Henthorn, 58, was indicted last week on a first-degree murder charge in the death of Toni Henthorn, 50, a wealthy ophthalmologist from Mississippi. Prosecutors say she fell more than 140 feet off a cliff in a remote area far from the trail the couple had been hiking.

Henthorn's attorney, Craig L. Truman, declined to comment Wednesday.

Henthorn told authorities his wife was trying to take a photo of one of the park's majestic views when she slipped, according to the search warrants. The documents describe Henthorn as a controlling and obsessive husband who stood to benefit from his late wife's three life insurance policies totaling $4.5 million.

Prosecutors at a hearing last week said they also believe Henthorn killed his first wife 17 years earlier, though he has not been charged in that case. Sandra Lynn Henthorn, who died in May 1995, was crushed to death when a car slipped off a jack while she and her husband were changing a flat tire. Henthorn received nearly $500,000 from her life insurance policies.

In both of his wives' deaths, investigators said, Henthorn was the lone witness.

He was also the only witness when a 20-foot beam fell on Toni Henthorn while the couple was working at their mountain cabin, according to the documents. Henthorn called for his wife to come outside. Toni Henthorn went outside and bent over to look at something on the ground, then was struck by the beam, her mother told investigators. She told her mother that if she had not bent over, the beam would have killed her.

Relatives and friends told investigators there were other times that they were concerned about the Henthorns' relationship. They said Henthorn controlled his wife's phone calls and limited her contact with their daughter, now 9. A baby sitter wondered if Henthorn was having an affair because he claimed to travel for work so much, the documents show.

He told friends he made money as a fundraiser for churches and nonprofits, but investigators found no proof that he was steadily employed. But they did find he owned a life insurance policy on his former sister-in-law for $400,000. Investigators found the woman and Henthorn had called each other more than 130 times in 2012.

After Toni Henthorn's death, he gave her brothers conflicting information about what he was doing when she fell. One brother told investigators that Henthorn recalled getting a text message about his daughter's soccer match when he "saw a blur, looked up and Toni was gone." He later said he was looking for a text message about his daughter getting to the babysitter's house. Investigators found time stamps on the texts didn't match the timeline Henthorn gave them.

This guy is a real piece of work. Get away with murder once and then you have to get greedy and try again?

I always thought that would be the perfect way to get rid of someone, the old 'slipped while hiking' story. Even with the 'X' on the map and the life insurance policies seems like it would be really tough to prove...

I have one nagging question about the wealthy ophthalmologist who married this douche though...
didn't she see it coming?

Relieved: Sonserae Leese-Calver, who once dated suspected Colorado murderer Harold Henthorn. She was with her husband when she was phoned by the FBI and asked to help their murder inquiries
I absolutely dodged a bullet': Woman who dated man accused of murdering BOTH his wives tells how they met on same Christian singles website where he found his second alleged victim
  • Harold Henthorn told friends that his wife Toni had slipped while trying to take a photograph during a hike in Colorado in September 2012 and fell 140ft
  • But the coroner could not rule out homicide and the FBI launched an investigation then looked into his first wife's eerily similar death
  • Henthorn took out life insurance policies worth $4.5m and had claimed $500,000 for his first wife's death
  • He met second wife on Christian website where he also found Sonserae Leese-Culver who dated him in 2000 thinking he was simply a widower
  • Leese-Culver, of Los Angeles, told MailOnline she believed she had dodged a bullet by ending her relationship with him
  • Henthorn is awaiting trial on one charge of murder and under investigation over the death of his first wife

A Colorado man charged with killing his second wife 17 years after the bizarre death of his first has been giving "wildly varying stories" about both cases, federal prosecutors claim in a newly filed motion.

The suspicious claim against two-time widower Harold Henthorn, 58, came with prosecutors' request on Thursday to introduce evidence at his upcoming first-degree murder trial about not only that 2012 death but the 1995 one as well, the Denver Channel reported.

Henthorn is only charged in the murder of his second wife, 50-year-old Toni Henthorn, who prosecutors say was pushed off a cliff during their 12th wedding anniversary in Rocky Mountain National Park in 2012.

It followed Hentorn taking out multiple life insurance policies on her, totaling $4.5 million.

But prosecutors say Toni's tragic 140-foot fall wasn't much more unusual than Sandra Lynn Henthorn's death in 1995.

In that tragedy the 37-year-old was beneath a car changing a tire on the side of the road when the jack apparently gave way, crushing her to death.

[...]

"Toni is not Henthorn's first spouse to die in bizarre circumstances leaving her husband with significant insurance money," prosecutors wrote in the motion obtained by the station.

U.S. Attorney John Walsh further cited Harold Henthorn immediately cremating his wives' bodies, against the family's requests.

Harold had allegedly also told law enforcement and family members that he did not see Toni fall from the cliff, despite describing her to a witness as having been trying to take a picture on the edge just before she slipped.

The hike up the rocky peak was also described by Harold as having been stumbled upon that day after a bit of scouting for an intimate location.

But prosecutors say a search of his car the next day recovered a map with a pink X marking the spot where Toni fell.

"Henthorn had extensively scouted the hike. Contrary to what he told law enforcement, he made nine different trips to the area around Rocky Mountain National Park that summer. And in the fortnight before their anniversary, Henthorn had hiked six trails to find the perfect one for the trip," prosecutors stated.

In Sandra's death, there are apparently also some red flags.

Prosecutors say on the night she was killed, Harold turned away a passing motorist who offered to shine their vehicle's headlights on their car as they worked.

After the couple's vehicle fell, Harold also gave widely differing accounts of what happened - to first responders, witnesses, friends and family.

"...the deaths of Henthorn's wives taken individually could have been accidents. But, taken together, the doctrine of chances removes that possibility," prosecutors stated.

Meanwhile the Douglas County Sheriff is hoping to assure the public that they too haven't given up their investigation into Sandra's horrific death.

The case was reopened in October of 2012 over what the department described as "extraordinary circumstances" involving the death of Henthorn's second wife.

Sheriff Tony Spurlock said Thursday that he owes it to Sandra's friends and family to provide a clearer picture on what might have happened that day.

“This case is extremely complex and over the past 27 months our dedicated detectives have tirelessly re-examined this case and will continue until we have exhausted every aspect," said Spurlock in a release. "In the past 20 years, investigations and investigative techniques, as well as technology have not only changed drastically, but have allowed many cases to be reopened.”

...an X drawn on the spot...

And did he wear his I'm With Stupid shirt too, the one with the hand pointing North?

I've never had to crawl under a vehicle while it was up on the jack to change a tire. I've always loosened the lug nuts a turn, positioned the jack while the wheel is still attached firmly enough that the vehicle won't fall on me, then come out from under the vehicle (if I had to go under it) to lift it up and remove and replace the tire.

That explanation smells, and badly at that.

That should have been the first clue that there was something seriously wrong with this guy. smh.

Very much. As you stated there is little to no reason to be UNDER the jacked-up car while changing a tire. My Hubby is a mechanic and of all the times I have seen him physically UNDER a car it was never when he was changing a tire.
