Take 6
Mom comes home leaves the baby on the floor and goes upstairs. She claims she heard the baby screaming she comes running downstairs to find the pet ferrets had eaten of the babies nose and lips.

.

"The baby's nose was gone, and a lot of the flesh from under the nose was gone and the cheek (too)," Smythe said. "It had little holes all over the head from where the ferrets were on her."
..,,,,
"Just imagine that one-month-old baby, that can't help herself, (and) two or three animals are eating it alive," Smythe said. "Imagine the pain."

Heard on the news they have 6 dogs 3 ferrets and 5 children in the home. The only food was cranberries and peanut butter as well as the house being invested with fleas. Not a good combination for a newborn.

I completely blame the mother. Ferrets are very cool very hyper very snappy creatures they are mini carnivores that were tamed in the medieval times to kill rodents in castles and cottages if the serfs could ever get their hands on them which I doubt. They are use to attacking animals their size or a bit larger. No one in their right mind would leave one alone with their baby. They are smaller than weasels and unfortunately more domesticated as they could survive in the wild long but are still wild animals in the concept of pets. I was the only one in a 4 county square to interact with wildlife when some douchebag or hapless soul was busted with ferrets. Laws had been passed to where wildlife could no longer kill them and had to hand them over to me to take to a safe house and get out of the state. There were some amusing tales of ferret retrievals with wildlife with one being like a comedy skit when I went to do a pick up I had to register where the ferret was going to go and this one warden is "how do I know you are sending it to Nevada?" I'm like do you want me to have a friend take a picture of it outside a Casino with a little feather in it's band on it's head? they never asked me again. My mamaw had a pair of weasels when I was little she made them socks they would sleep in they would kill ground hogs and gophers as well as rats bigger than them. She never would let them anywhere near me or viceversa

Apparently the ferrets escaped from the cloth cages. Improper housing for weasels with a baby around.

they would be able to chew right through they have to be in wire cages. I personally feel most people are too irresponsible to care for ferrets

Authorities near Philadelphia say a trio of pet ferrets mauled a newborn who was left downstairs in her car seat, chewing off the baby's nose and part of her cheek and lip.
Officials say the month-old baby was attacked Thursday afternoon by ferrets that escaped from a cloth cage while the girl's mother went upstairs and her father was sleeping. Authorities say the baby was in stable condition in intensive care Friday after emergency reconstructive surgery at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Police say four other young children have been placed with relatives amid concerns about their parents' ability to care for them.

"The parents, I believe, have problems," Darby Borough Police Chief Robert Smythe told the Delaware County Daily Times. "They are challenged. They can't take care of these kids."

The ferrets scampered away when the mother came downstairs after hearing the baby's screams, Smythe said.

[...]

Smythe said investigators found more food for the family's ferrets and cats than for the children. Police have asked prosecutors to approve charges against the parents.

"Just imagine that 1-month-old baby, that can't help herself, (and) two or three animals are eating it alive," he said. "Imagine the pain."

Ferets are one of the worst animals on the planet. Fucking disgusting. Anyone who owns one as a pet should be executed on the spot, sick twisted fucks the lot of em.

I wouldn't be surprised if the parents sic'd the animals on the baby rather then it being a case of shocking negligence. Fucking scum. Better charge the lot of em.

Hopefully some plastic surgeon takes this case on for free. Sucks about the nose, not a great deal can be done to make that look normal, but they can work miracles with the creation of new lips these days.

The family lives in desperate poverty and has been monitored by the Delaware County Child & Youth Services and two other agencies, Smythe said. Four other children under age 5 — all with developmental disabilities — live in the house, which he described as squalid. They are staying with grandparents while social service officials investigate.

Besides the ferrets, six cats, two dogs and two turtles also lived in the home, which is infested with fleas or mites. The only food in the home was a jar of peanut butter, a can of cranberries and some juice, Smythe said. But there was pet food.

"It's not that they're bad parents, it's just that the children are not being taken care of," he said.

Darby Police Chief Robert Smythe is an idiot .

Um, then why exactly did it take this long to remove the children? Why did a baby have to be disfigured in order for them to be helped?

"It's not that they're bad parents, it's just that the children are not being taken care of," he said.
They are bad parents. Ferrets are one of the worst pets you can keep around small children, and if you buy one from a pet store they will inquire if you have young children in the home. They are known for attacking toddlers and babies. Ferrets have extremely strong jaw muscles, so strong that they have been confused with having lock jaw. You cannot easily pry a ferrets mouth open when they do bite.

My parents had a ferret named Simon when I was born. He was loving and fine with the adults but would stalk me, my parents had to start caging him all the time because he'd try and sneak into my crib or follow me around trying to nip at me. The day my mom found me screaming with Simon dangling from my nose was the day we got rid of him. She couldn't get him to let go and he ripped a gash completely through my nostril in the attempt to remove him from my face. I still have a small scar and that was 32 years ago lol

If they were in desperate poverty, why were they feeding six cats, two dogs and three ferrets?

This reminds me of a case in NYC about a single mother who came home from the hospital with her newborn. She put the baby on the floor and went out to buy some food. Her dog hadn't eaten for days and thought the baby was food. You know what I'm saying.

It was national news and everyone was talking about it, some with sympathy for the mom. The point is, everyone heard about it and was warned about leaving pets alone with babies.

It really makes me wonder how good the so-called Information Highway is at getting news out to people who need to know.

we had ferrets and polecats for rabbiting when i was young i still have scar where one bit my finger my brother had to get it off me because it would not let go they can be mean little sods but they were not pets they were workers

From the article SueSue posted:
A Delaware County couple charged with endangering the welfare of their one month old say they are good parents.

“It’s just we made one mistake by leaving them alone,” Burnie Frain said. “We regret it and we blame ourselves for it.”
Yes. That was your only mistake...

Frain and Bernales are intellectually disabled according to the Darby Police Department which investigated the case.
And yet they've got five children, four of whom are developmentally disabled. These morons should have been sterilised at puberty.

RABID FERRETS [not above those are the breeders]

"
The parents, 42-year-old Burnie Fraim and his fiancee, 24-year-old Jessica Benales, have both been charged with five counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

In an interview with CBS Philly, Fraim attempted to deflect some the blame .

“It’s not our fault. We didn’t do it, the animals did it,” Fraim told the station. “This little mistake happened. I wish it never did happen, but it happened.”

In a press conference, Darby Borough Police Chief Robert Smythe expressed his disgust at the incident.

"This is the most horrific thing I have seen happen to a child in 45 years in this town," Smythe said.

The chief said conditions in the home were deplorable, lacking food and infested with insects. Fraim said he has five children total, all special needs.

Fraim said he was sleeping at the time of the attack.

"The baby looked like, um, like it didn’t have a face,” the father told CBS Philly.

The child is in stable condition, according to the Associated Press.

The three ferrets tested positive for rabies and were euthanized."

I saw this on the news. The father seemed to have some sort of mental retardation. I don't know about mom bc she wasn't in the interview, neighbors interviewed said the family was nice and loving, and that they were shocked. Rabies!?!? Really? How does that happen (I know how that would happen with an outside/inside pet, but a ferret?), and does that mean the other pets and kids are gonna have to be treated too?

The whole household. They may just destroy the remaining animals. The poor baby will have undergo that treatment too.

totally agree with you, all animals need to be tested as the ferrets didn't get rabies outta the air. Dimes to dollars they were rodent infested in the scummy living conditions in which case they need to be doing a rat round up and testing. A rat could have bitten a ferrett while they were sneakin around the house eating garbage. Good people don't raise their kids like that

Gross!!! I didn't even think of rats, poor kids :(

something coming into the house with rabies is the only way they could be rabid or another animal in the house with them [unless they were bought that way which would be impossible unless it just happened and then improbable]

That's what I thought but I couldn't imagine how a mostly indoor pet (ferret) would be rabid. Even if you took your ferret outside I would imagine it on a leash or in one of those outdoor pens. Rats would make sense since it seems they were living in squalor. @PsychoKitty
It's so sad to think of everything that baby went through, and will have to continue to deal with bc of her injuries :( Now she has to go through rabies treatment (which I hear is very painful?). Hopefully these kids are put into a home where they will get the attention and love they deserve.

I was bit by a ferret when I was about four, but I did corner it. F

They will destroy the remaining animals. The only way to get a positive rabies result is to remove the animals head, ship it off to a lab, and the brain has to be studied. The only way around that is if all the animals were up to date on their rabies vax, which I highly doubt :(
