Two pensioners found dead at their homes in the West Midlands and London both knew the man accused of their murders, a court heard.

Leo Barnes, 33, is accused of killing 80-year-old widow Cynthia Beamond and Philip Silverstone, 67, last June, Wolverhampton Crown Court was told.

The prosecution said Mr Barnes hit Mrs Beamond on the head with a "heavy object" before travelling to Belsize Park where Mr Silverstone was killed.

Mr Barnes, from Runcorn Road, in Balsall Heath, Birmingham, is also alleged to have stolen property, including a television from the Halesowen home of Mrs Beamond, whom he had known since childhood.

Jurors were told Mr Barnes claims someone else carried out the killings.

I have always wondered how does anyone ever justify killing anyone and especially elderly people that they have known most of their life. And for a TV? There's nothing but crap on TV anymore any how.

To be fair, you can hook your computer or laptop up to your tv nowadays via hdmi cables. TV blows, but the internet is still awesome and having a big screen for it is damn nice.

A man who was on trial for the murder of two pensioners has been found dead in his prison cell.

The 33-year-old, who denied murder, was found hanged in his cell at HMP Hewell in Redditch on Sunday, West Midlands Police said.

The Ministry of Justice said he was being monitored for self harm.

Mr Barnes' trial started at Wolverhampton Crown Court last Monday.

He was due to be cross-examined by prosecutors on Friday but did not appear in court after complaining of feeling ill.
