Known to have murdered at least 24 if not more women, as a police officer would troll the streets at night and offer women rides only to kidnap torture and murder [and then in some instances rape] his hapless victims. I wasn't sure wheither to put this here or past crimes so excuse me if I screwed up. This guy had a mommy complex he would take out on victims resembling his mother. Out of all of them one woman survived only to have her charges refuted by his wife so he was allowed to continue his crimes.

I wonder if his wife feels like the POS she is? He should have been given a death sentence. Usually countries like this has a little bit of common sense. He was a police officer so maybe that was the only thing that saved his sorry pitiful ass.

Russia hasn't executed anyone since 1996. they have suspended capital punishment indefinitely. a life sentence is what he got. he did confess and plead guilty to 24 murders and it was proven he had contracted syphilis from one of the murder victims. he was a sexually motivated killer so maybe he did stop when he said he did. dna is always turning over cold cases. be nice to put others to "bed".

Slight update to this story rather than starting another one: it's now believed he killed closer to 81.

A Russian serial killer known as "the werewolf" killed as many as 81 women, according to police.

Former Siberian policeman Mikhail Popkov, who is serving a life sentence for murdering 22 women, has confessed to 59 new killings, according to the Russian Investigative Committee (RIC).

The RIC, Russia's equivalent of the FBI, says Popkov told them he had killed the women during a rampage which ran from 1994 to 2000.

The women, aged between 17 and 38, were raped before being killed with axes, knives or screwdrivers.

The new death toll would make Popkov Russia's worst serial killer, with more victims than Andrei Chikatilo - the "Butcher of Rostov" - who murdered 53 people, and "Chessboard Killer" Alexander Pichushkin, who killed 49.

RIC spokeswoman Karina Golovacheva admitted there had been confusion over the number of victims......

A Russian serial killer dubbed the "werewolf" has gone back on trial after confessing to killing 59 more women.

Mikhail Popkov, who was convicted of raping and killing 22 women, has confessed to killing another 59 more between 1992 and 2010, Interfax news agency reported. The former police officer appeared in the city of Irkutsk in Siberia for a first hearing, during which charges were read out.

The convicted serial killer would offer his victims lifts late at night, sometimes in his police car while off duty, and then murder them with a hammer or axe. He has been nicknamed "the werewolf" and the "Angarsk maniac" by Russian media.

In an interview with the Meduza news site in December, the 53-year-old said he believed he was cleansing his city of prostitutes. Popkov said he targeted women he viewed as immoral or those who were drunk.

Investigator Yevgeny Karchevsky said that while some of Popkov's victims were prostitutes and drug addicts, the majority were ordinary women with families. "His diagnosis is homicidal maniac, that he has an uncontrollable desire to commit murders," the investigator told Meduza.

In 2015, Popkov was convicted of raping and killing 22 women and attempting to murder two more. He was sentenced to life in prison.

If convicted following his latest confession, Popkov will become Russia's most prolific serial killer in recent history.

Ah what better why to clean the streets of immorality than to kidnap, rape and murder.
I can see he has an excellent grasp of the Bible coupled with wonderful common sense.
