Detectives investigating the 1996 murder of Melanie Hall have asked the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) for a decision on whether to charge a suspect.

The 45-year-old man, who was arrested on suspicion of her murder in November 2013, has been released on bail while the CPS considers the evidence.

Miss Hall, 25, from Wiltshire, was last seen leaving a nightclub in Bath.

Her remains were found in a bin bag near the M5 in 2009.

The man, who was arrested at his home in Bath, has been bailed until December.

Miss Hall, who was a clerical worker at the Royal United Hospital in Bath, had been for a night out at Cadillacs nightclub when she went missing.

A black bin liner containing her bones and skull was found by a workman clearing vegetation next to a slip-road at junction 14 of the motorway, near Thornbury in South Gloucestershire, on 5 October 2009.

I am uncertain whether the 38-year-old man and the 39-year-old man are one and the same, and I am uncertain whether he/either is identical to the person they are currently suspecting and asking for charges against, but it sounds as though it has been a frustrating case to work: No body for what must have seemed like forever. Then Melanie's remains turn up on a verge in a plastic bag so long after that there are only bones left.

They appear to have suspects, but not enough evidence for a case.

A suspect in the investigation into the 1996 murder of Melanie Hall will not be charged, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has said.

The CPS said there was "insufficient evidence" to charge the 45-year-old man, who was arrested on suspicion of her murder in November 2013.

Police have been granted extra time to question a 45-year-old man on suspicion of the murder of Bath graduate Melanie Hall.

The man, from Wiltshire, was arrested on Thursday morning and remains in police custody.

On the 20th anniversary of her disappearance police revealed they had obtained DNA evidence from an item found at the scene where Miss Hall's remains were discovered.

Her parents, Steve and Pat Hall, also made an appeal for information and offered £50,000 of their own money as a reward for information leading to a conviction.
