Amanda Todd
Tributes are pouring in for a Port Coquitlam, B.C., teenager who committed suicide after posting a video describing how she was tormented by bullies and struggling with depression.

Fifteen-year-old Amanda Todd's cry for help was posted in a YouTube video in September. YouTube took it down Thursday following her death.

The teen doesn't speak through the entire nine minutes, but flashes dozens of cards telling how she sank into depression after being relentlessly taunted and physically attacked at school.

She writes that it started after an unknown man convinced her to expose herself online in front of a webcam. He blackmailed her and spread the photos around, destroying her reputation.

She moved schools several times in Coquitlam and Maple Ridge, but couldn't escape bullies, Amanda says through the flash cards.

In the notes underneath the video, she writes, "I'm struggling to stay in this world, because everything just touches me so deeply.... Haters are haters but please don't hate," said the posting.

Amanda's friend, Gabriel Harrison, told CBC News that some of her tormentors were vicious.

"People were hating on her on Facebook and posting rude stuff on her wall, and they'd give her shady looks and stuff and harass her in public too," he said.

Grief shakes community

News of the teen's death has sparked a wave of grief and anger online and in her community.

Cheryl Quinton, who is with the Coquitlam School Board, says the suicide has shaken students and staff.

"Student deaths in such tragic circumstances do hit a community very, very hard," said Quinton.

She said the school was aware of the video before Amanda took her life, and supports were in place to help her.

Bullying has been an issue for schools for decades, and it's particularly difficult to combat now in an age of social media, Quinton said.

Premier speaks out

B.C. Premier Christy Clark posted a message on YouTube expressing her own concern and condolences for the family.

[...]
"Every child, everyone needs to be able to feel safe at school. And when we send our kids to school we need to know that they are going to come home safe."

RCMP have released a statement saying it was an unimaginable tragedy that has a huge impact on the community as a whole.

Hacktivist group Anonymous has reportedly tracked down the man who bullied Amanda Todd, a 15-year-old Canadian girl who committed suicide after suffering torment that led to depression and anxiety.

Anonymous named Todd's alleged bully on Monday in a post on Pastebin.com. The accusers allege that the man who targeted Todd, made her flash him and then turned her life into a living nightmare is a 30-year-old from New Westminster, British Columbia. The post describes him as the man who "extorted amanda todd for pictures. This is the pedophile that social engineered Amanda Todd into supplying him nude pictures."

Anonymous also revealed his address.

Vice magazine posted information that reportedly further links Todd to the alleged bully, including Google Map screenshots of his house, his Facebook profile, chat conversations and screenshots from a "jailbait" website account supposedly tied to the man.

Vice reports that Anonymous got involved in tracking down Todd's bully after nude autopsy photos of deceased Amanda Todd leaked online.

Anonymous commented on its involvement in finding those linked to Todd's suicide.

“We generally don’t like to deal with police first hand but were compelled to put our skills to good use protecting kids,â€￾ read an email sent by Anonymous to Canada's CTV News. “Ironically we have some good people in Vancouver who brought this to our admin’s attention. It’s a very sad story that affects all of us.â€￾

The man who Anonymous identified as Todd's bully appeared in court on Monday on charges of sexual assault and sexual interference with a minor, unrelated to Todd, CTV reported. The man claims he was Todd's friend and pointed the finger at a New York man who was harassing her.

Todd, who lived in Coquitlam, B.C., an area by Vancouver, committed suicide last Wednesday. In early September, she posted a YouTube video detailing her struggle with bullying, self-harm and suicide attempts.

The torment began, according to Todd's YouTube video, after she flashed a man online when she was in seventh grade. One year later, she said, he tracked her down on Facebook and forwarded her topless photo to everyone. She was bullied at each school she went to, beat up by angry girls and attempted to kill herself by drinking bleach.

Todd's family is distraught by her passing, but her father finds solace in the fact that his daughter now has some peace.

“She was very courageous and I really love that she made that video,â€￾ her father Norm told the Vancouver Sun. “She told me why she made it — she wanted to send a message out so that it wouldn’t happen to someone else, so no one would have to go through what she went through [...] She did that on her own and her message is being delivered now. It makes me happy that her voice is still alive and being heard."

The two had planned to get tattoos together. Amanda wanted hers to read "Stay Strong" on her arm. Norm plans to get the "Stay Strong" tattoo for his daughter, according to the Sun.

Vancouver, Canada
– A 32-year-old Internet bully who allegedly drove 15-year-old Amanda Todd to hang herself on October 10th has been outed by Anonymous, a world-famous computer hacking organization.
When Amanda Todd was just 12 years old, a man in an Internet chat room convinced her to flash her breasts on webcam.* A year later, she asserted that he contacted her again and insisted that she perform a little show for him.* She declined and the man responded by posting the year-old picture of her breasts to a Facebook page of his own creation, using the picture as its profile photo.* He then messaged her friends to announce its existence.
News of the new page spread quickly amongst her classmates, leading to relentless online bullying and ridicule, causing her to drink to excess, become depressed and suicidal, and cut her own arms.
Todd moved to a new city and a new school, but the bullying picked right up again when she began a romantic relationship with an older man who had a girlfriend.* After the relationship with the man ended, his girlfriend beat Todd up in front of a group of people who were apparently very happy to let her lay in a ditch for a while.…

This should serve as a warning to all those cowards that hide behind a computer to torment others.

Negative Amanda Todd post costs man his job
A man who posted negative comments about the death of Amanda Todd was fired from his job after an Airdrie, Alta., woman alerted his employer.

Todd is the 15-year-old who killed herself last week after suffering years of bullying. Many online memorial sites have popped up in response to her death, and thousands of people have posted comments on them.

Christine Claveau was looking at a site when she saw what she thought was a particularly hateful anonymous post.

She said the comment read, "It's about time this bitch died."

Claveau said she tracked down the identity of the sender in Toronto and forwarded a note to his employer, the retail store Mr. Big and Tall.

The man was fired.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of Amanda Todd," said Dave McGregor, president and CEO of Grafton-Fraser Inc. which operates the retail chain, in response to a query from CBC News.

"Out of respect for the family, I decided not to comment further on this situation beyond our statement that we took the action we felt to be appropriate. I will tell you that the individual in question is no longer employed with our company."

McGregor said the company's ethics are based on tolerance, respect and fair and honourable treatment of all individuals, internally, with customers and the population as a whole.

"We have zero tolerance for the mistreatment of others no matter what form it takes," he said. "We feel that the focus should remain on the issue at hand, which is bullying and how we work together to stop it. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Todd family."

Mixed reaction online

"I'm glad that they fired him and they took such a strong stance against bullying," said Claveau.

"But I just think that even having him reprimanded or having the embarrassment of his company knowing what he did is what I was aiming for, just to say … you know what you do in your pastime can affect who you are at work and your personal life too."

Claveau said she has received a lot of response to what happened — most of it positive but some of it negative.

"You can't please everybody, so I'm getting a lot of people saying I was the bully in the matter, or it wasn't right to contact his employer. So I'm getting a little bit of negative backlash."

Claveau said so-called "internet trolls" must be held accountable for what they say and do online.

"Trolls" are people who anonymously post negative comments on the internet to elicit a reaction.

She said she's more encouraged than ever now to monitor the internet and "out" those behind hateful statements.

For Prime Minister !!!

* Go girl! *

Airdrie is about 2 hours south of me, I was there for two weeks this past summer for job training ..

It should warn as a warning but it probably won't. This shit happens way too often; people decide that just because a person is far enough away they can bully and torment them however they want without repercussions being brought down upon them.

I don't know how the guy managed to convince a 12 year old to flash herself but he deserves to be fucking shot. I mean a 16 year old is one thing but a 12 year old. Now I was well-endowed as a 12 year old so I know that they can sometimes have a womanly figure but I still don't get how a mental "WTF 12?!?!?!" block doesn't come into play. I'm not condoning someone getting 16 year olds to flash themselves btw.... I'm just saying it makes more sense to me than a 12 year old. [Plus over in England 16 is the age of consent so maybe my perception is fuxed in this case]

I'll totally admit that I cried throughout the video because the whole thing hit me hard. Bullying is awful in all its forms.

I wish Amanda had talked to the people who loved her and realized that those pictures couldn't follow her forever. Everyone makes mistakes, especially kids and they shouldn't be punished forever for that. No kid should feel so alone and be bullied so harshly that they think the only way out is to kill themselves.

R.I.P. Amanda; I hope they bring the guy who started this to justice and that those people who bullied you can become better human beings by knowing the consequences of their words.

I agree with you, I too wish she had reached out to her loved ones. But you know how we felt as teen, and how an issue that is insignificant can be blown up to be the end of your life. Not saying that this matter is insignificant because it isn’t. But imagine if we felt like dying when small things happened, now throw bullying , sexual harassment and tormenting and that is a recipe for tragedy when it’s a teenager dealing with it.

I sometimes feel that we live in an era where WE are the center of everything. We aren’t thinking of others as we should. Like I tell my kids before you open your mouth and say something that may hurt someone else, think. If you were treated, or spoken to in that same manner how would that make you feel? Then you have the internet where many cowards hide to do their evil deeds. This is awesome. I hope that this group continues to call people out that feed off the pain the cause people for no reason other than enjoyment.

Does anyone have the ifunny app? I ask because it just seems like the majority of the comments (which I'm pretty sure are teens) are really negative towards her.

I don't know much about Anonymous. But is it possible that they can get the wrong person sometimes. And I realize they are like really good hackers, but even so, how the heck can they find one single person when it comes to things like this?

The first paragraphs are updates to the original story following them

UPDATE 4 PM 10/17/12: In the days since this initial report about Amanda Todd’s suicide, the story has become even more convoluted and concerning. In an effort to clear some of this up, I decided to vet Anonymous New Jersey's research on Kody Maxson. While no one can definitively link Kody to Amanda's suicide, it is apparent that Kody’s internet habits are unilaterally disgusting and revolve around online sexual extortion. Read my latest report here.

UPDATE: We received a copy of the image that Anonymous New Jersey leaked through Pastebin that was previously inaccessible as a link hosted by Facebook. It's a mosaic of Google Maps screenshots from British Columbia, the personal information of Amanda's alleged harasser, and screenshots of accounts on jailbait websites that seem to link Kody Maxson to Amanda Todd. A copy of the image, with all personal details blurred, is available here.

In September of this year, a 15 year old girl named Amanda Todd from British Columbia posted a video onto Youtube wherein she detailed a terribly fucked up story with Bob Dylan-esque cue cards, of how one internet pedophile had deliberately destroyed her happiness. You can get all of the painful details from the video, but basically she flashed a strange guy while she was in the seventh grade over webcam. That image got into the hands of a pedophile who tracked her through high school, then leaked the images to her friends and family, while continuing to stalk her online and heavily disrupt her life. Some of the Canadian mainstream media have described it as “bullying... through online social mediaâ€￾ but clearly this pattern of controlling and destructive behavior is more than just a case of “no one likes youâ€￾ wall posts and “you’re fatâ€￾ instant messages.

In light of the recent exposure of Reddit’s most notorious jailbait administrating troll by Gawker, and the news of Hunter Moore’s disgusting little empire embarking on a new online endeavor, it seems like all eyes are uncomfortably on the jailbait exploitation community on the internet. While jailbait certainly has a more palatable ring to it than child porn, it has clearly become a very insidious force on the internet that is pitting overly clever pedophiles against insecure teenagers.

Unfortunately the Amanda Todd story gets worse, as her exploitation did not end at death. After autopsy photos of Amanda, naked and deceased, leaked onto the internet, the hacktivist group Anonymous responded. Anonymous claimed that a teenager named Alex Ramos distributed the photos, and proceeded to bomb his Twitter account. In what was publicly available on Alex’s Twitter timeline yesterday night, he insisted that what he found was simply available over Google Images. The biography of his Twitter account has now been hacked to say “Raging faggot that loves posting nudes of a dead suicide victim.â€￾

An individual that has started a New Jersey based branch of Anonymous to find justice for Amanda Todd has also, supposedly, uncovered the identity of the pedophile that tracked and blackmailed Amanda. In a document they leaked to the text file sharing service Pastebin, they allege that the pedophile’s name is Kody Maxson of New Westminister, British Columbia. To back up their claims, they linked to a Facebook picture that’s protected (so that’s no help) and quote from an account tied to Kody Maxson on a jailbait forum, where he posted images of nude teenagers and made it known he was blackmailing underage girls.

In what can best be described as extremely bad taste, Hunter Moore has thrown a handful of horrible tweets into the Amanda Todd discussion. Hunter, the creator of IsAnyoneUp, a now defunct website that allowed guys to post photos of their naked ex-girlfriends with public links to their Facebook profiles, is an online architect that has helped people like Kody Maxson reach girls like Amanda Todd.

After tweeting shit like “I wonder if Amanda Todd will be on walking dead tonightâ€￾ and “Life’s a Bleach - Amanda Toddâ€￾ which is a reference to Amanda’s first bleach drinking suicide attempt (it’s not clear if this is how she committed suicide on the 10th), he was met with the usual torrent of hatred and disgust that the man has grown accustomed to. In response to the backlash, Hunter tweeted: “i lost 200 followers from my amanda todd joke. then gained 250 from making fun of a girl for wanting me to take her buttonhole virginity. <3.â€￾

While Amanda described being bullied by her classmates in the original Youtube video she posted, the pedophile that stalked her through high school is clearly reason her torment began and continued to worsen. While this story is receiving a lot of attention in the media, the Canadian press has so far failed to properly illuminate the role of popular jailbait image boards and the horribly destructive control that one lone creep, hiding behind his computer, had over Amanda’s life. Luckily, the RCMP has a 20-25 man task force working on this, as they told the National Post, so at least they seem to know what’s up.

Hopefully, the popularization of Hunter Moore and sites like IsAnyoneUp can be reconsidered after a tragedy like this, and that the catch-all of “online bullyingâ€￾ becomes examined under a more complicated lens. The vigilante justice of Anonymous is simply a band-aid on a very serious and quickly growing problem online that is putting vulnerable young girls like Amanda Todd in a very complicated and destructive type of danger.

If that organization says it's him then I will put money on it. I am sure they have dug deeper that a I.P address and basic code, Anonymous is nothing to fuck with they are the best at what they do and are 99.9999% correct in their findings. The guy was just in court for fucking a sixteen year old girl he met on the same web site he met and tormented Amanda, does that sound like the picture of innocence to you?I hope he gets his ass stomped.

I agree ... same guys who had Luka Magnotta figured out and located which they passed to the cops when he was still killing just animals ... These guys are very skilled at what they do; it is a lifestyle and their job.

B.C. RCMP announced charges at a news conference late Thursday afternoon against a 35-year-old Dutch citizen in connection with the online sexual extortion of Amanda Todd, the B.C. teen who killed herself in October 2012.

'This is truly a day we've been waiting for'- Carol Todd
"This is truly a day we've been waiting for," said Todd's mother Carol, her voice breaking as she fought back tears. "I always knew deep in my heart that what my daughter told me was the truth."

The man, whose identity has not been released, is facing five charges, including extortion, internet luring, criminal harassment and the possession and distribution of child pornography.

Dutch man's case linked to Amanda Todd
Canadian police confirmed Thursday an arrest has been made in the Netherlands in the case of a Canadian teenager who was blackmailed into exposing herself in front of a webcam. The 15-year-old later committed suicide after detailing her harassment on a YouTube video watched by millions around the world.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police Insp. Paulette Freill said a suspect has been arrested in the Netherlands and charged with extortion, luring and criminal harassment and possession of child pornography for the purpose of distribution. The 35-year-old man has been identified under Dutch privacy laws only as "Aydin C."

Talking a teen into exposing herself online is horrible. Using those pictures to fuck with the social life of a fourteen year old is sadistic and pathetic.

"Aydin C."

So he's fighting extradition because he has a Dutch passport and wants to be judged in Dutch courts (for a lesser sentence, of course). I know someone who will jump riiiight on that.

Anyway, he claims not to be a predator because he's been doing this to adults too and he only wanted money. I wonder how much money he was expecting to get from a 15-year old. Oh, and he was arrested for webcamsex with underaged girls earlier this year.

Still, they will not be able to prove he is liable for her suicide, I think. I hope they can get him on the photo's though.

A 34 y/o bullying a 15 y/o.... Wow you gotta be shitting me. Let's drag him through the streets for a little good ole fashion humiliation. An adult bullying is pathetic but bullying a child. That's beyond wtf to me.

The Dutch Supreme Court ruling follows an agreement by the country's authorities to send the convicted cyber-bully to Canada.

Aydin C faces trial on charges related to Amanda Todd's online harassment.

He was sentenced last month in the Netherlands to 11 years for internet fraud and blackmail.
[....]
It is not clear when extradition might take place.

Under Dutch law the country's justice minister must personally approve the request before it can be carried out.
[....]
The Dutch suspect was convicted in the Netherlands in March of blackmailing dozens of young people around the world into performing sex acts in front of web cams.

His victims were from countries as far away as Britain, Canada, Norway and the US.

The cyber-bully was arrested in January 2014.

He faces additional cyber-bullying charges in Canada related to making and distributing child pornography, extortion and harassment.

This guy is scum ... but so are her parents. If they had enforced some boundaries in terms of internet access this probably wouldn't have happened.

Canada jury convicts Dutch man of sexually extorting Canadian teen Amanda Todd

aydin-coban.jpg

A Canadian jury on Saturday found Dutch national Aydin Coban guilty on all charges of sexually extorting a teenager from British Columbia whose video of her online harassment sparked a global debate on cyber-bullying.

Coban, who was extradited to Canada, was convicted in the British Columbia Supreme Court of extortion, two counts of possession of child pornography, child luring and criminal harassment against Amanda Todd, the teenager who died by suicide in 2012.

Todd sparked an international debate over cyber-bullying when she posted a YouTube video detailing her online harassment. She committed suicide at age 15.

Coban, 44, had pleaded not guilty to five criminal charges relating to Todd’s case. He was not charged with Todd’s death.

British Columbia Supreme Court Justice Martha Devlin had told the jury they could only find Coban guilty of the charges against him if prosecutors proved their case beyond a reasonable doubt. Otherwise, they must acquit Coban, Devlin said.

The verdict came after weeks of testimony that involved many witnesses and evidence presented by prosecutors before the start of closing arguments.

Coban was extradited from the Netherlands to Canada in 2020 after being convicted in Amsterdam of similar charges involving many young girls and gay men.
