Two handymen raped a mother and burnt her alive before taking a grinning selfie as they drove away from her blazing body, a court heard.

Stephen Unwin and John McFall sent depraved social media messages to each other in the three weeks before they murdered Vietnamese nail technician Quyen Ngoc Nguyen, 28, in a five-hour ordeal at Unwin's home.

Jurors were told that on the night of the killing, McFall messaged Unwin asking: 'Are we raping the c****?'

The pair are alleged to have held Miss Nguyen - also known by her English name of Anna - at the house, raped her, and then forced her to hand over PIN numbers to her bank cards.

Prosecutor Jamie Hill, QC, told Newcastle Crown Court: 'The prosecution say that the motive for this killing was a combination of violent, warped sexual fantasy and greed.'

Unwin, 40 and McFall, 51, were caught on CCTV leaving Unwin's home in Houghton-le-Spring, Tyne and Wear, with what prosecutors say is Miss Nguyen's body wrapped in a white sheet.

Unwin carried Miss Nguyen, who stood less then 5ft tall, over his shoulder while McFall pulled down the sheet to try to obscure her from security cameras that were attached to the house next door, it is alleged.

They then bundled her into her black Audi A4 and drove her to dirt track where they allegedly doused her and the car in petrol and set it ablaze.

Mr Hill told the court: 'They took a selfie of themselves in the car. McFall is holding the phone and smiling into the phone as they are driving along.'

Their victim, the court heard, was likely still to have been alive when she was set ablaze on the back seat of her vehicle.

Mr Hill told jurors: 'It is clear she was unable to help herself by the time she was taken out of Unwin's house and driven to that lane.

'It is likely you will hear from a pathologist that the presence of certain gases in her body tend to suggest she was still briefly alive at the point the fire was started.'

The court heard Unwin and McFall worked on properties which Miss Nguyen rented out and that she visited Unwin's home earlier in the evening of August 15.

However she was unaware that the pair had taken what prosecutors described as a depraved sexual interest in her.

Mr Hill said they had exchanged messages via text and social media about Miss Nguyen.

Unwin also asked McFall on August 9: 'Do you want a Vietnamese?'

Mr Hill said: 'This was Unwin suggesting or offering a sexual encounter with a Vietnamese person.'

On the day they raped and killed her, the texts continued.

Miss Nguyen, a mother of two, arrived in the UK from Vietnam in 2010 and moved into a home in Killingworth, North Tyneside.

She lived with her sister and the pair opened a nail bar called Glitter Nails in Birtley, Tyne and Wear.

Unwin and McFall, who sat at opposite ends of the dock separated by custody officers, blamed each other for the rape and killing of Miss Nguyen.

Unwin's DNA was found on her body but he claimed they had a consensual sexual relationship and had intercourse some days before her body was found.

Unwin, of Houghton-le-Spring, and McFall, of Blackpool, Lancs, both deny rape and murder and the trial, expected to last four weeks, continues.

I find it very hard to believe that she would not have washed for "some days" after having sex with anybody.

Ms Nguyen, who had come to the UK in 2010 from Vietnam, helped her sister run a nail salon in Gateshead.

There was also a "secret" element of her life, renting properties for people without the correct immigration documents - some of which were used to cultivate cannabis.

She had met Mr Unwin through his job working for a landlord, and was seen on CCTV arriving at his home in Shiney Row on the evening of 14 August.

The prosecution said that she was led into a "trap" and held captive for more than four "terrifying hours" by him and Mr McFall, who frequently worked together maintaining properties.

Cripes they made it sound like they were ordering Take-Out.
What are the odds this isn't their first rodeo?

Forensic evidence indicates a man accused of raping and murdering a woman found dead in a burning car had sex with her, a court heard.

Newcastle Crown Court heard Miss Nguyen's DNA and a spot of her blood were found on Stephen Unwin's trousers.

Forensic scientist Dr Mark Dale said internal swab samples taken from her also showed Mr Unwin's DNA, suggesting sexual activity on or around the night of her death.

Mr Unwin claimed he had met Miss Nguyen for consensual sex a few days before her death, the jury was told.

Jurors heard her DNA was found on a gun belonging to Mr McFall and also in a pair of his shorts, but less than would be expected after sexual activity.

A needle found in the house yard also had the victim's DNA on it and "may have been used to inject" her, Dr Dale said.

There was not enough evidence to say who had handled the syringe, he said.

Two convicted killers accused of raping and murdering a Vietnamese beautician ate a curry as she lay dead or dying on the floor, a court has heard.

Stephen Unwin, 40, and William McFall, 51, are said to have subjected young mother Quyen Ngoc Nguyen, 28, to a five-hour ordeal of rape and beating in Unwin's home in Houghton-le-Spring near Sunderland.

They had both previously killed vulnerable elderly people during violent burglaries and joined forces after meeting in prison and being released from life sentences, prosecutors say.

At their trial yesterday, Prosecutor Jamie Hill QC questioned McFall about the period of time after they attacked Miss Nguyen.

Mr Hill asked McFall: 'Did you and Stephen Unwin cook and eat a curry about this time?'

McFall replied: 'At some point.'

Mr Hill continued: 'With someone, you told us, dead lying on the floor, you attended to your own needs to have a meal?'

McFall, 51, insisted he didn't eat all the curry because he felt ill and and most of it went in the bin.

The jury has heard that Unwin, now 40, battered and stabbed a 73-year-old man in Houghton-le-Spring after breaking into his home on Christmas Day 1998. He then torched the bungalow.

He was convicted of murder at Newcastle Crown Court and released on licence 14 years later in December 2012.

Meanwhile, McFall bludgeoned Martha Gilmore, 77, to death with a hammer in a raid on her home in Carrickfergus, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, in May 1996. He was released on licence 14 years later in October 2010.

On the night Miss Nguyen was killed, McFall messaged Unwin using a vile racial slur, asking: 'Are we raping the ch***?' jurors have been told.

After the murder the pair allegedly posed for a grinning selfie in Unwin's car.

Prosecutors say they held seven stone Miss Nguyen - also known by her English name of Anna - at the house, raped her and forced her to hand over PIN numbers to her bank cards, which they stole.

Mr Hill previously told the court: 'The prosecution say that the motive for this killing was a combination of violent, warped sexual fantasy and greed.'

After raping and beating Miss Nguyen on August 15th last year, they bundled her into her car and drove to a remote spot, where they set the vehicle ablaze, the court heard.

The pair worked together on properties which Miss Nguyen rented out. She is said to have been unaware of the pair's interest in her.

Unwin and McFall deny rape and murder and have blamed each other for the crimes. The case continues.

Ugh horrible. Seven stone means she weighed less than 100 lbs & couldn’t fight them both off, poor lady. Also “being released from life sentences” means shit apparently.

Two killers who went on to torture and set fire to a Vietnamese woman have been given whole-life jail terms.

Stephen Unwin, 40, of Houghton-le-Spring, was convicted at Newcastle Crown Court of her rape and murder.

William McFall, 51, who is from Northern Ireland but lived in Blackpool, was found guilty of murder but cleared of rape.

The pair first met in jail while serving life terms for separate murders and made contact again after being released.

Mr Justice Morris described Unwin as a "calculating, manipulating and ruthless killer" and branded McFall "an extremely violent man capable of monstrous behaviour".

Explaining his decision to sentence them to whole-life terms, he said they had murdered Ms Nguyen in a "cold-blooded and callous manner" having deliberately lulled her "into a trap".

He added: "She suffered an unimaginable ordeal.

"Both during and after that ordeal, the two of you casually went about your everyday task, chillingly devoid of human empathy."

Unwin had been released on licence in December 2012 having battered a pensioner to death during a break-in on Christmas Day 1998 in Houghton-le-Spring.

The fire he started to cover his tracks meant the victim could only be identified by his medical records.

McFall was released on licence in October 2010 after killing a pensioner with a hammer when she disturbed him breaking into her home in Greenisland, Northern Ireland, in May 1996.
