A man has been found guilty of killing a businessman who was shot dead during a botched warehouse raid in Birmingham.

Father-of-four Akhtar Javeed, 56, died defending his business in Digbeth from an armed robbery earlier this year.

Suraj Mistry, 26, was found guilty at Birmingham Crown Court of manslaughter and possession of a firearm.

Mistry, of Laundon Way, Leicester, was also convicted of plotting to commit robbery along with Lemar Wali, 19. Both men were found not guilty of murder.

The jury is still considering two firearms charges against Wali, of Osmaston Park Road, Derby.

Another man, 25-year-old Tahir Zarif, is believed to be on the run in Pakistan.

[doublepost=1516306755][/doublepost]Found it! But watch as my update melds with a reply that is more than a year old.

A man suspected of shooting dead a businessman almost two years ago has been detained in Pakistan, police say.

Officers have now arrested and detained Tahir Zarif, 27, in Pakistan and are looking to deport him.

In September 2016, Suraj Mistry was found guilty of manslaughter and jailed for 23 years.

Two other men were jailed for seven years and six years and eight months respectively for conspiracy to rob.

Officers had suspected Mr Zarif, of Derby, had fled and gone into hiding in Pakistan five days after the shooting.

Father-of-four Mr Javeed died during a raid at his catering supplies firm, Direct Source 3, based on Rea Street.

A trial at Birmingham Crown Court, which ended in September 2016, heard how he was tied up and shot in the leg as the robbers demanded he open the company's safe.

He attempted to escape but during a struggle was shot again and died at the scene.

Interesting. Over here all would have been found guilty of felony murder even if they didn't intend for him to die since he was killed during the commission of a felony by a co-conspirator.

Insane the shooter only got 23 years and not convicted of murder. You tie someone up and shoot them is more than enough to prove intent to kill.

I thought using a gun in the UK was a big deal? What would his sentence have been had he not killed the father of 4 (!!) with a gun? Probation?

It is a big deal. You can get five years for mere possession of a gun, and that is for a first offender. A repeat offender can get up to ten years. For just possession of a gun.

With or without the gun, the manslaughter sentence could be "prison for life", but there is always a minimum term mentioned, and with the gun in the mix that minimum term is always going to be significantly higher than without it.
